SAINT CRESCENTIAN AND COMPANIONS, MARTYRS Saint Crescentian (Crescentianus, Crescentinus) was born in Rome of noble parents, and subsequently entered the military service. He later divided his fortune among the poor and devoted himself wholly to the service of the Lord. During the persecution of Diocletian he had to flee Rome and settled at Città di Castello (Tifernum), where he led a solitary life. Someone reported Crescentian to the governor for being a Christian, whereupon he was taken prisoner and, after great torment, beheaded by the sword in A.D. 287. Later, when it was safe to do so, the inhabitants of Città di Castello built a church in his honour and placed his relics in it. From there they were taken to Urbino in 1068 - with the permission of the then bishop Fulco - and the saint himself was elected patron of the city.
