SAINT SABINUS AND COMPANIONS, MARTYRS In 303, during the reign of Diocletian, the president Venustianus had the bishop of Assisi, called Sabinus, imprisoned for being a Christian, along with his two deacons, named Marcellus and Exuperantius (Exsuperantius), and other clergymen. The public hearing was held the very next day. The bishop had both his hands cut off after allegedly dishonouring an idol. The two deacons, Marcellus and Exuperantius, were stretched on the rack, struck with rods and lacerated with iron claws. Both gave up the ghost under these torments, invoking the name of Christ, their bodies were thrown into the water, but pulled out again and buried. The condemnation of Saint Sabinus was postponed; yet he was kept in close custody. He was finally taken to Spoleto and convicted there. He was then scourged until he died. SAINT EXUPERANTIUS, MARTYR OF ZÜRICH Saint Exuperantius, a martyr, was killed for the Christian faith in at Zürich (Tigurum), Switzerland, towards the end of the third or beginning of the fourth century. - Church art depicts him holding his severed head. SAINT EXUPERANTIUS, BISHOP OF CINGOLI The name Exuperantius (Exsuperantius) is derived from the Latin exsuperans , meaning excellent . Saint Exuperantius, French: St-Exupérance, an African by birth, was the son of Eulasius and Perpetua. Whether the father adhered to paganism or to a heretic doctrine is not quite certain; but his mother Perpetua seems to have been a Christian. At the age of twelve Exuperantius received baptism, and after some time left his native country for Rome.  A very zealous proclaimer of the gospel, Exuperantius became bishop of Cingoli, and died there after 15 years of office, distinguished by the gift of miracles. According to his biography, he was ordained bishop of Cingoli by Pope Paschasius; but there never was a pope of that name, and perhaps it should be put "Paschalis," which would mean that Exuperantius flourished in the first half of the ninth century, because...

SAINT JUVENTIUS AND COMPANIONS, MARTYRS OF ROME The Bollandists * list Saints Juventius, Cyriacus, Exuperantius and Heraclia as martyrs at Rome; but it is uncertain when and in what manner these saints suffered martyrdom. Saint Juventius, whom the sources variously call Viventius, Joventius , Juvencus , was first buried in Rome. From there, a substantial part of his relics was later translated to the Jesuit Church in Naples, where they are kept in a chapel at the foot of a gilded bust of this saint. (I . 43).   ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN JUNE Saints celebrated on the 1st of June WELCOME! SAINT CRESCENTIAN AND COMPANIONS, MARTYRS Saint Crescentian (Crescentianus, Crescentinus) was born in Rome of noble parents, and subsequently entered the military service. He later divided his fortune among the poor and devoted himself wholly to the service of the Lord. During the persecution of Diocletian he had to flee Rome and settled at Città di Castello (Tifernum), where he led a solitary life. Someone reported Crescentian to the governor for being a Christian, whereupon he was taken prisoner and, after great torment, beheaded by the sword in A.D. 287.  Later, when it was safe to do so, the inhabitants of Città di Castello built a church in his honour and placed his relics in it. From there they were taken to Urbino in 1068 - with the permission of the then bishop Fulco - and the saint himself was elected patron of the city. SAINT EXUPERANTIUS, BISHOP OF RAVENNA Saint Exuperantius, a bishop of Ravenna in Italy, lived at the time of Emperor Honorius. He succeeded St Urso in the episcopal office in the year 396, managed it for 22 years, and died in the year 418. He found his resting place in the church there. The Roman Martyrology *  commemorates him on the above-mentioned day. SAINTS FELIX AND REGULA, MARTYRS  On September 11 is the memorial of the third century martyrs Saints Felix and Regula of Zurich: A brother and sister who at the time of the famous martyrdom of  Saint Maurice and his companions under Maximian Herculeus, took refuge in Switzerland.
