SAINT SABINUS AND COMPANIONS, MARTYRS In 303, during the reign of Diocletian, the president Venustianus had the bishop of Assisi, called Sabinus, imprisoned for being a Christian, along with his two deacons, named Marcellus and Exuperantius (Exsuperantius), and other clergymen. The public hearing was held the very next day. The bishop had both his hands cut off after allegedly dishonouring an idol. The two deacons, Marcellus and Exuperantius, were stretched on the rack, struck with rods and lacerated with iron claws. Both gave up the ghost under these torments, invoking the name of Christ, their bodies were thrown into the water, but pulled out again and buried. The condemnation of Saint Sabinus was postponed; yet he was kept in close custody. He was finally taken to Spoleto and convicted there. He was then scourged until he died.
