SAINT JOVINIAN, MARTYR OF AUXERRE Saint Jovinian (Jovinianus) (May 5, May 16) was a lector and martyr at Auxerre, a companion of Bishop Peregrine , in whose biography he is also mentioned on May 16 (III. 563. n. 1). Pope Sixtus II had entrusted these holy men with a mission to France. There he sacrificed his life for Christian truth. The Roman Martyrology * lists this 3rd century martyr on May 5. The Bollandists *, in their entry on May 5, point out that various sources provide his name in various forms, for instance Juvenianus, Juvinianus, Julianus, Jovianus, Vivinianus, Vivianus, Romanus. It is not entirely certain whether this Jovinianus is identical with the subdeacon Saint Jovianus, whose memorial is celebrated on May 16 (II. 5).
