Their splendour shows us Your greatness, which infinitely surpasses that of all creation. In Your loving providence, You saw fit to send Your Angels to watch over us. Grant that we may always be under their protection and one day enjoy their company in heaven. Heavenly Father, You are glorified in Your Saints, for their glory is the crowning of Your gifts. You provide an example for us by their lives on earth, You give us their friendship by our communion with them, You grant us strength and protection through their prayer for the Church, and You spur us on to victory over evil and the prize of eternal glory by this great company of witnesses. BLESSED ITTA, COUNTESS Blessed Itta [Itha] was born of the Counts of Kirchberg, in Suabia, not far from Ulm, in the year 1160. Having passed her youth piously, under the care of her parents, she was married, when 18 or 19 years of age, to Henry, Count of Toggenburg.  SHE GOT MARRIED The young couple lived, for a considerable time, in great love and harmony, until the Count falsely accused her of unfaithfulness and, deaf to her prayers, tears and supplications, dragged her to the battlements of the castle, which stood upon a high rock, and cast her into a terrible abyss, convinced that she would be dashed to pieces.  But divine Providence watched miraculously over the innocence of the holy Countess, who although precipitated from a height of more than 400 feet, remained as unharmed as if Angels had carried her.  SHE THANKED ALMIGHTY GOD Recognising the miracle which the Almighty had wrought, sh...

SAINT MARTIN OF PORRES, RELIGIOUS Saint Martin of Porres was born in Lima on December 9, 1579, “son of an unknown father”. He was the illegitimate son of Spanish nobleman, Juan of Porres, and Ana Velasquez, a former slave. His father refused to recognise him as his son at first. When he was eight years old he spent a brief period of time with his father in Ecuador but later returned to Lima where his father continued sending money so that Martin could finish his studies. RELIGIOUS LIFE He asked to be admitted as a “lay brother” at a Dominican convent in Rosario, Lima, and was accepted at the age of 15. In the convent he soon became recognised for his humility, charity and meekness. He is often portrayed in icons with a broom in his hand and is still well known as the “Brother of the Broom”, which highlights his readiness to perform even the humblest of tasks.
