ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN AUGUST
Saints celebrated on the 11th August
Prayer to the Angels and the Saints
Heavenly Father, in praising Your Angels and Saints we praise Your glory, for by honouring them we honour You, their Creator. Their splendour shows us Your greatness, which infinitely surpasses that of all creation.
In Your loving providence, You saw fit to send Your Angels to watch over us. Grant that we may always be under their protection and one day enjoy their company in heaven.
Heavenly Father, You are glorified in Your Saints, for their glory is the crowning of Your gifts. You provide an example for us by their lives on earth, You give us their friendship by our communion with them, You grant us strength and protection through their prayer for the Church, and You spur us on to victory over evil and the prize of eternal glory by this great company of witnesses.
Grant that we who aspire to take part in their joy may be filled with the Spirit that blessed their lives, so that, after sharing their faith on earth, we may also experience their peace in heaven. Amen.
ST TAURINUS, BISHOP OF EVREUX
In the biography of this bishop and apostle of Evreux (Ebroicae) the phenomenon repeats itself that some still put him in the apostolic age, while the Bollandists and many others assign him the 4th or 5th century.
ANGELIC LIGHT SHONE AROUND HIM
His veneration reaches into the deepest darkness of antiquity, but its history has been lost. The biography written by his alleged student Deodat does not claim to be credible. But the legend tells many wonderful things about this saint. Angelic light shone around him even when he was born.
HE WISHED TO SPREAD THE KNOWLEDGE AND LOVE OF JESUS CHRIST
His father's name was Tarquinius, and he was a pagan, but his mother Euticia was a devout and zealous Christian. Both lived in happy circumstances in Rome. Her only son grew up to be a scientifically educated and pious youth under the careful care of his mother. His wish was to spread the knowledge and love of Jesus Christ, which lived in his heart, also into the hearts of others; and he carried within himself the desire to become a martyr if possible.
HE MADE THE SIGN OF THE CROSS, WHICH DEFEATED THEM
Pope Clement I ordained him a priest and sent him to Evreux to convert the pagans. When he achieved considerable success here, two wizards attacked him and wanted to take his life. But he made the Sign of the Cross, which defeated them. This was reported to the Prefect Licinius, who had the saint arrested. When he fearlessly confessed the name of Christ in front of the judgment seat, the judge was angry and ordered him to be violently beaten. But the executioners' arms froze, and Taurinus remained unharmed.
HE RAISED A DEAD GIRL BACK TO LIFE
Another miracle involved Taurinus raising a dead girl back to life. Following this incident, 120 persons asked to be baptised.
But Taurinus did not die a martyr as he had wished for. Instead, he died in church after having celebrated the holy Mass. A cloud and visible angels appeared in the church, and when the cloud had lifted, those present realised that Taurinus had died sitting on the chair. The angels then proceeded to console the faithful. This legend, however, has no real historical basis.
Most of his relics were destroyed during the French Revolution. All over France, St Taurinus is commemorated on August 11, and on September 5, the former translation of his relics is remembered.
