ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN NOVEMBER
Saints celebrated on the 3rd of November
Prayer to the Angels and the Saints
Heavenly Father, in praising Your Angels and Saints we praise Your glory, for by honouring them we honour You, their Creator. Their splendour shows us Your greatness, which infinitely surpasses that of all creation.
In Your loving providence, You saw fit to send Your Angels to watch over us. Grant that we may always be under their protection and one day enjoy their company in heaven.
Heavenly Father, You are glorified in Your Saints, for their glory is the crowning of Your gifts. You provide an example for us by their lives on earth, You give us their friendship by our communion with them, You grant us strength and protection through their prayer for the Church, and You spur us on to victory over evil and the prize of eternal glory by this great company of witnesses.
Grant that we who aspire to take part in their joy may be filled with the Spirit that blessed their lives, so that, after sharing their faith on earth, we may also experience their peace in heaven. Amen.
BL. MANUEL GARRIDO - STRENGTHENED BY THE EUCHARIST
Blessed Manuel Garrido was born in Linares, Spain, in 1920. As a young person he was very fond of sports and nature. As a teenager he joined Catholic Action and during the Spanish Civil War, when many priests and religious were arrested, Blessed Manuel acted as a Eucharistic Minister.
He secretly brought the Blessed Sacrament to the sick and those who had requested to receive the Body and Blood of Jesus in their homes. Blessed Manuel was then arrested for secretly taking Holy Communion to prisoners. At the age of 22 Blessed Manuel contracted spondylitis, and became confined to a wheelchair because of his deformity. In 1962 Blessed Manuel also became blind. Despite his illnesses Blessed Manuel received professional accolades for his writing and journalism.
HE WROTE BEAUTIFULLY OF THE THINGS OF GOD AND THE THINGS OF THE CATHOLIC FAITH
He wrote beautifully of the things of God and the things of the Catholic Faith. He founded ‘Sinai’ – the name both for his magazine for sick people and a support association of small groups of 12 people who offer their prayer and suffering for the media. Blessed Manuel wrote nine books and many articles, many of which he dictated to his sister Lucia and friends.
From his days of being a Eucharistic Minister, he was completely devoted to Holy Communion, which he received daily. The Eucharist was his strength and love. It united him to Jesus and blessed him with the grace to carry his own cross on his pilgrimage to heaven. Blessed Manuel died in 1971.
Pope Benedict said of Blessed Manuel that, ‘he was a faithful layman who knew how to irradiate the love of God with his example and suffering that confined him to a wheelchair for 28 years… At the end of his life he lost his sight, but he continued to win hearts for Christ with his serene joy and his unwavering faith.’
