WELCOME!

SAINT PETER FAVRE, PRIEST

Peter Favre (Faber) was born in 1506 of poor Savoyard shepherds, and, at his earnest request, was sent to school, and afterwards to the University of Paris. His college friends were St Ignatius of Loyola and St Francis Xavier

HE BECAME ST IGNATIUS' FIRST COMPANION

Ignatius found the young man’s heart ready for his thoughts of apostolic zeal; Peter became his first companion, and in the year of England’s revolt was ordained the first priest of the new Society of Jesus. From that day to the close of his life he was ever in the van of the Church’s struggle with falsehood and sin. Boldly facing heresy in Germany, he laboured not less diligently to rouse up the dormant faith and charity of Catholic courts and Catholic lands.

OBEDIENT UNTO DEATH

The odour of [St] Peter’s virtues drew after him into religion the Duke of Gandia, Francis Borgia, and a young student of Nijmegen, Peter Canisius, both to become Saints like their master. Pope Paul III had chosen Blessed Favre to be his theologian at the Council of Trent, and King John III of Portugal wished to send him as patriarch and apostle into Abyssinia. Sick and worn with labour, but obedient unto death, the father hastened back to Rome, where his last illness came upon him.

HIS LAST ILLNESS

He turned his thoughts at once away from all other cares to get his soul ready for its departure. He died, though hardly forty, as one would wish to die, in the very arms of his best friend and spiritual father, St Ignatius.

LIFTING UP OUR SOUL AND DRAWING NEW STRENGTH

As the body sinks under fatigue unless supported by food, so external works, however holy, wear out the soul which is not regularly nourished by prayer. In the most crowded day we can make time briefly and secretly to lift our soul to God and draw new strength from Him. "Your first duty is to your soul, and then other things may come; always remembering that the good of the soul is to be the final object of everything." [St] Peter Favre

"I PRAYED FOR MYSELF AND FOR THE PORTER, THAT THE LORD MIGHT NOT MAKE US WAIT VERY LONG IN PURGATORY BEFORE ENTERING HEAVEN"

One day when the [St] Peter was going to hear the Lenten sermon in the court chapel at Valladolid, "the porter, not knowing me," he tells us, "did not admit me, and so, remaining outside the door, I called to mind how often I had given free entrance into my soul to vain thoughts and bad spirits, and had refused it to Jesus, who was knocking at the door, and how badly Jesus Christ was received everywhere by the world. I prayed for myself and for the porter, that the Lord might not make us wait very long in purgatory before entering heaven. Many other good thoughts then came into my mind. Therefore I felt great affection for that porter, who had occasioned me so much devotion."

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN AUGUST Saints celebrated on the 13th of August Marian Feast Days WELCOME! FATIMA APPARITION - AUGUST 13 The Fatima Children “BUT IN THE END MY IMMACULATE HEART WILL TRIUMPH.” But in the end my Immaculate Heart will triumph. The Holy Father will consecrate Russia to me; it will be converted, and a certain period of peace will be granted to the world. THE AUGUST 13 EVENTS On August 13, the children were in jail at Ourem. The civil administrator threatened to boil them in oil if they did not tell the Lady’s secret. Though badly frightened, they could not think of disobeying our Lady. In disgust, the administrator finally freed them. A large number of people, not knowing that the children had been kidnapped, went to the Cova for the scheduled appearance of the Lady. At noon, there was a loud clap of thunder. Then, according to an eyewitness: “Right after the thunder came a flash, and immediately we all noticed a little cloud, very white, beautiful and bright,...

ST BERTHA OF AVENAY, ABBESS AND MARTYR - 1 MAY

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN MAY Saints celebrated on the 1st of May WELCOME! ST BERTHA OF AVENAY, ABBESS AND MARTYR The name Bertha (Berta) is derived from the Old German  bercht, brecht, bert etc., meaning shiny, splendid.  Saint Bertha, a martyr and abbess of Avenay (Aveniacum) in the diocese of Rheims, was descended from a noble family. Married to  St Gumbert (April 29), she obtained her husband's consent to join the monastic life. She then built the aforementioned monastery of Avenay. Following an apparition of the Blessed Virgin, she received many nuns there. Once, when Bertha was silently praying for water for her monastery, St Peter appeared to her and showed her a place where there was a spring, which then began to flow into the monastery in a running stream (ex quo fonte mox rivus egressus secutus est eam ad coenobium remeantem).  Finally, towards the end of the 7th century, she was killed by her stepsons - for what reason is not specified, perhaps in ...
