ST LEUDINUS OF TOUL, BISHOP
Saint Leudinus Bodo, (September 11th), also Leuduinus, French St-Bodon or Leudin, was, according to Zedler the 17th bishop of Toul (Tullum Leucorum) in Lorraine.
THE FAMILY
He was born between the years 600 - 610 of a very respected pious family in the diocese of Toul. He spent most of his youth at Meuse (Mosa) en Bassigny near Toul. His parents were well-off, which is also illustrated by the fact that they could afford to entertain the holy Abbot Eustasius, who stayed at his Leudinus' parents, accompanied by St Agilus.
St Leudinus' father was called Gundoinus (Bertoldus) and his mother was Saretrudis (Bertildis). He had a younger brother, named Fulculfus and was nicknamed Bodo. St Salaberga was his sister. He had a daughter, named Teutberga, from his wife Odila, who later became the first abbess in the Bodon-moutier.
THE MONASTERIES ETIVAL AND OFFONVILLE
According to the Bollandists, it is uncertain whether St Leudinus founded the monasteries Etival (Stivagium) and Offonville (Offonis villa), as some believe. At any rate, they reckon that if he did found these monasteries, he must have founded them before he himself entered the monastery.
HE LEFT THE WORLD, AND SO DID HIS WIFE
We do know for certain that Leudinus followed his sister Salaberga's holy example and left the world, and so did his wife. They mutually agreed to embrace the religious state. St Leudinus entered the monastery at Laon (Lugdunum Clavatum, Laudunum).
HIS SISTER HAD FOUNDED TWO MONASTERIES
His sister had founded two monasteries there, a female, into which his wife entered, and a male, in which he himself lived. But he was not there long when he was called to the episcopal see of Toul.
HIS RELICS WERE EVENTUALLY TRANSLATED TO LAON
On what exact date this happened cannot be stated with any certainty; but it is likely that St Leudinus Bodo married in 625 or 630, went to a monastery in 660, became bishop in 665 and died before 680. He was first buried at Toul in the Church of St Mansuetus, but his relics were eventually translated to Laon. St Leudinus is not listed in the Roman Martyrology, but other martyrologies do mention him.
