ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN OCTOBER
Saints celebrated on the 9th of October
Prayer to the Angels and the Saints
Heavenly Father, in praising Your Angels and Saints we praise Your glory, for by honouring them we honour You, their Creator. Their splendour shows us Your greatness, which infinitely surpasses that of all creation.
In Your loving providence, You saw fit to send Your Angels to watch over us. Grant that we may always be under their protection and one day enjoy their company in heaven.
Heavenly Father, You are glorified in Your Saints, for their glory is the crowning of Your gifts. You provide an example for us by their lives on earth, You give us their friendship by our communion with them, You grant us strength and protection through their prayer for the Church, and You spur us on to victory over evil and the prize of eternal glory by this great company of witnesses.
Grant that we who aspire to take part in their joy may be filled with the Spirit that blessed their lives, so that, after sharing their faith on earth, we may also experience their peace in heaven. Amen.
BL. NIDGARIUS, BISHOP OF AUGSBURG
This blessed Bishop of Augsburg's relics were exhibited in 1689, along with those of other Augsburg saints, for public veneration.
His name is also written Nithgar, Nitgar, Nigar, Neodegar, Nidogarius, Nidker, Niker. In the register of the bishops of Augsburg, the approximate year of the beginning of his episcopate is 815. He was the thirteenth of the Augsburg bishops. It is generally assumed that he was at the same time, or at least before taking up the episcopal office, abbot in Ottobüsten.
The following events happened during his episcopate:
• The decision of a legal dispute with Bishop Hitto von Freising regarding the possession of the church in Kienberg in 822, which was unfavourable for the bishop,
• His presence at the synod in Mainz in 828 and
• The foundation of the St Magnus Church at Füssen, the completion of which he had to leave to his successors.
The pious and learned bishop was already called a saint during his life. His body was buried at St Afra and raised for the first time in 1064 by Bishop Embrico. In The Bollandists treat him together with Adalbero.
