WELCOME!
THE HOLY INFANT OF CEBU - SEÑOR SANTO NIÑO DE CEBU
Celebrated particularly on the third Sunday in January, Señor Santo Niño de Cebu (Philippines) is associated with a religious image of the Christ Child. According to history, the statue of the boy Jesus was a baptismal gift to Humaway, the wife of Rajah Humabon. Their Christian baptism took place in 1521, Rajah taking the name Carlos, and his wife that of Juana.
THE OLDEST SURVIVING RELIC
The image of the Santo Niño is the oldest surviving Catholic relic in the Philippines, along with Ferdinand Magellan's Cross. The Augustinians, the first missionaries in the country, are the caretakers of the miraculous image since 1565.
The image is replicated in various parts of the Philippines with different titles and the Christ Child has become one of the most beloved and recognizable Filipino cultural icons.
SPIRITUAL SIGNIFICANCE
The Child Jesus depicted in the statue reminds us of the childlike attitude that we need to cultivate as Christians, which our Lord stresses in the Gospels in the Bible (Mark 10:15, Matthew 18:2-5, etc.). A child’s heart is sincere and generous. At the same time, his mind is open to learning.
Today, the original image is permanently encased behind bulletproof glass inside its chapel within the Basilica del Santo Niño.

PRAYER:
Grant, we beseech you, almighty God, that the venerable feast of the Holy Infant of Cebu may increase our devotion and promote our salvation. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen.
