ST JUNIANUS, ABBOT OF NOAILLES - 13 AUGUST

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN AUGUST Saints celebrated on the 13th of August WELCOME! SAINT JUNIANUS, ABBOT OF NOAILLES Saint Junianus [Saint Junien], Abbot of Noailles (Noviliacum) in France, descended from a noble family that lived in the region of present-day Poitiers (Pictavium). Even as a tender boy, he imitated the life of the hermits. When he had grown to manhood through prayer, reading, and contemplation of the Holy Scriptures, he secluded himself from the world in a place called Chaulnay (Coloniacum) , to spend his life contemplating heavenly things. However, many who visited him in his solitude compelled him to accept them as disciples. He eventually yielded to their requests and was then ordained a priest, in order to be not only a father but also a teacher of the monks through his priestly authority. Saint Radegundis , wife of King Chlothar, availed himself of his advice and assistance in all matters concerning her salvation. Chlothar assigned him a very spacious place to...

ST JUNIANUS, HERMIT - 15 NOVEMBER

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN NOVEMBER   Saints celebrated on the 15th of November WELCOME! SAINT JUNIANUS, HERMIT According to several martyrologies, Saint Junianus (November 15), a hermit at Rheims (Remensis), was baptized by Bishop  Saint Remigius . Since, however, there is no information about him either in the Breviary and Directory of Rheims , or in the works of other Rheims writers, the Neo-Bollandists * infer in the Life of Saint Junianus on October 16 (VII. 842, nos. 23 ff.) that this Saint Junianus Remensis seems to be identical with Saint Junianus , who was probably also baptized by  Saint Remigius , and for whom a special feast might have been celebrated on November 15. They therefore list just  two saints with the name Junianus, namely S. Junianus Nobiliacensis and S. Junianus Commodoliacensis . The Elenchus * does indeed mention a "Hermit Junianus" on November 15, but without further details. Other hagiographers (e.g., in Migne *, the Frenchma...

ST LAZARUS, DEACON AND MARTYR - 12 APRIL

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN APRIL Saints celebrated on the 12th of April WELCOME! SAINT LAZARUS, DEACON AND MARTYR Saint Lazarus, a deacon in Trieste (Tergestum) in Istria, was martyred for his faith during the reign of the Emperor Antoninus Pius. Born of Christian parents, Lazarus was honoured and loved by the whole city already as a youth because of his edifying services to the local church and because of the obvious signs of his future holiness. When Lazarus reached the required age, he was ordained a deacon, after which event he immediately distributed all his wealth among the poor. Around this time the emperor appointed a certain Pompeius as governor to Trieste, who set about seizing the Christians there. He arrived in Trieste in the dead of the night and immediately called together the leaders of the city to spy out the Christians there. Saint Lazarus, betrayed by an accuser, was sought out and discovered while he was at prayer with a group of fellow Christians. After several ...

ST JACOB, PATRIARCH - 19 DECEMBER

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN DECEMBER Saints celebrated on the 19th of December WELCOME! SAINT JACOB, PATRIARCH Joseph and Jacob reunited  Saint Jacob, Patriarch, is commemorated on December 19 and October 6.  In the year of the world 2168 (1836 BC), when the patriarch Isaac was 60 years old, his wife Rebekah bore him twins: Esau , who is also known as  Edom , from whom the Edomites or Idumeans descended. He was nicknamed Edom (which means red ) because of his reddish color and the equally reddish lentil porridge (mentioned in Genesis 25:30), and Jacob , who was later also called Israel , who is the immediate progenitor of the Israelite people. Even in the womb, the two brothers fought with each other, and when Rebekah inquired of the Lord about this, she received the answer that there were actually two peoples in her womb, and that the older would serve the younger (Genesis 25:22, 23). At the birth itself, Jacob held Esau's heel (Hebrew: akeb ), which is why he was n...

Before the French Revolution, his feast was always solemnly celebrated on September 20th with the exhibition of his relics in the Church of St Augustine. The saint is said to have built and consecrated this church and the churchyard around it, and to have appointed canons to serve it. From the Limoges Liturgical Calendar * for 1832, we see that the saint's feast is now celebrat...

ST AMANDUS OF ULM - 25 JANUARY

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN JANUARY Saints celebrated on the 25th of January WELCOME! SAINT AMANDUS OF ULM The name Amandus is derived from the Latin; it means the amiable one.  Saint Amandus, commonly called  Henry Suso , a member of the Order of  Saint Dominic  in Ulm, was born in 1300 in Constance on Lake Constance. One theory states that he was called Amandus because his wonderful beauty, which was so great that wild robbers who once attacked him in the forest fell down before him and confessed. Others reckon that God himself gave him the name Amandus because Suso, filled with divine love, deserved to be loved by God in return. Suso ardently loved God, especially under the form of "Eternal Wisdom," who is said to have once visibly adorned him with a wreath of blooming roses. For more information about Saint Amandus, see Henry Suso . (Information from  Stadler 's Complete Encyclopedia of Saints,  Volume  1, Augsburg, 1858, p. 159) Stadler's Com...

ST JUNIANUS, HERMIT - 16 OCTOBER

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN OCTOBER Saints celebrated on the 16th of October WELCOME! SAINT JUNIANUS, HERMIT Junianus  (commemorated on October 16), also called  Ninianus  or  Vivianus  by one of the hagiographers, was an anchorite in the French region of Limoges  (Lemovicum) , a disciple of  Saint Amandus . The life life of the latter is so closely connected to that of the former that the  Neo-Bollandists * provide both biographies together according to a written codex from Cluny, after having first eliminated the error that this  Saint Amandus , whose feast is actually celebrated on August 26, is identical with  Saint Amandus . Our  Saint Amandus   is said to have been the son of a Hungarian king, or, as the  Bollandists * correct, perhaps the son of a general who fought under Attila, the destroyer of Gaul, and he himself is said to have fought under the Gothic king Alaric or the Frankish king Clovis. In any case, ac...

ST AMANDUS - HERMIT

WELCOME! SAINT AMANDUS, HERMIT Saint Junianus is mentioned on June 25  (v. 78) in the life of  St Amandus of Gemelay   (Gimeliacum)  by the old Bollandists * as his pupil. However, the Neo-Bollandists* prove in the life of  Saint Junianus   (October 16 - VIII. 835) that the Bollandists Henschenius and Papebroch (the latter completed the life of  St Amandus   after the former's death), were mistaken on several occasions. They mixed up different saints of the same names. Listed by them are Amandus and Domnolenus  Gimeliacum ). One Domnolenus, on the other hand, the is in fact from  Limoges (Lemovicum) . He was buried in the church of St Gregory next to the monastery of St Andrew. Furthermore, St Amandus of Genouillac (Genuliacum, Genoliacum) is venerated in the Diocese of Perigord (Petragoricum) , from whom the French towns of Saint Dampnoles, Saint Anolet and Saint Andelain take their names. This St Amandus Genuliacens...

He flourished in the 6th century. His legend was written late and has little credibility. If we briefly summarize the main points, he was a hermit in the French region of Périgord, and was born and raised in the Auvergne of respected and Christian parents. When he was an adult, he went into solitude with two companions, Saint Amandus  (Amantius) (June 25) and Saint Cyprian (December 9), where admirers soon gathered around him and sought instruction from him. He then came to Périgord (Petrae erectae) and for some time received spiritual instruction from Abbot Salanus at the Monastery of Genouillac ( Genoliacum in the Diocese of Cahors). Afterwards, Sorus and his companions began a strict penitential life. Sorus started wearing a deerskin robe, and beneath it an iron chain hanging from hi...
