SAINT ISRAEL, PROVOST

The name Israel comes from the Hebrew Yisraël, meaning "Warrior of God" and is the epithet of the patriarch Jacob, from whom the Israelites take their name.

According to the Elenchus*, this Saint Israel (commemorated on December 22), a praecentor (choir director) in the Limoges region, is listed as "blessed" by Migne*. He is mentioned as "Saint Israel" by the Bollandists* in connection with the lives of the holy hermits Junianus and Amandus (on October 16 - VII. 844).

The Bollandists* (Maj. II. 701) also relate that Israel was a canon regular at Dorat (Ritter* calls this place "le Dorat"), where Abbot Gautier of Esterp was his pupil. Some time later, Israel became provost of St Junien (Commodoliacus) in the same French province of Limousin (Lemovicens prov.), where he saw to it that the church of St Andrew and Junian was restored. Finally, he returned to Dorat as choirmaster (French: grand chantre), where he died a holy death on December 22, 1014. A translation of his relics took place in 1639. According to Feller*, Migne*, and Butler* (VI. 365), a "History of Jesus Christ" in verse exists in the vernacular, which the Ducange Glossary falsely attributes to an Abbot Isaac of Esterp (Stirps). This work is probably the oldest existing in this language and proves that the Romanic language (la langue romaine) was already in use before the 12th century.
