SAINT JOHN THE GOOD, ARCHBISHOP OF MILAN
Saint John the Good (Johannes Camillus Bonus) is commemorated on January 10. He was Archbishop of Milan and, according to the acts of the Church of Milan in Genoa, first saw the light of day at Liguria.
"BONUS"
It is uncertain whether he was nicknamed Bonus from his family or whether his excellent character earned him the same.
He stayed in Rome for a long time and enjoyed the favour of the holy Pope Gregory the Great, by whom he was sent on a mission to Theodolinde, wife of the Longobard king Autharis.
THE SYNOD AT ROME
Later elevated to Archbishop of Milan, he attended a synod in Rome under Pope Martin I in 649. In association with the holy Bishop John of Bergamo he worked against the monothelets, was distinguished by the gift of miracles and died at an old age around the year 659. Some records say that he in fact passed away in 655.
THE SOLEMN TRANSLATION OF HIS RELICS
Upon heavenly revelations, Archbishop Heribert - who died in 1045 - sought out his holy body and placed it the Church of St Michael. This church having fallen into some degree of disrepair several centuries later, St Charles Borromeo, in 1582, took it upon himself to transfer the saint's relics into the local cathedral church.
OTHER SAINTS OF THAT NAME
Incidentally, there are other Johannes Bonus, e.g. Johannes Estremox, who is mentioned by the Bollandists on July 2 and on October 13 among "other saints". We also know of another saint of that name, who is listed on October 22 (also called Blessed Janbonus). Our Saint Johannes Bonus is inserted in the Roman Martyrology on January 10.
