BLESSED RUPERT, ABBOT OF OTTOBEUREN
This blessed abbot of Ottobeuren in Swabia was prior of the St Georgen Monastery in the Black Forest to begin with and was afterwards sent to Ottobeuren by Abbot Theodegar and installed as abbot on November 7, 1102.
He brought in distinguished men from other monasteries, took in God-fearing laypeople as brothers, and, next to the church, he also built a monastery for virgins, some of whom died as recluses. This monastery and church were erected from the ground up. The inauguration was carried out on November 1, 1126 by the bishops Herimann of Augsburg and Ulrich of Constance. This foundation attracted even persons of aristocratic descent who excelled through humility and zeal for penance. Their rule was that of Cluny.
After ruling the Lord's house with love, patience and wisdom for 43 years, he passed away at the age of 123, on August 15, 1145 (according to Lechner*). More recent information states that Rupert died in 1125. Around 1145, his grave in the abbey church was already widely visited and venerated by the people because of the miracles that occurred there. His relics were raised in the year 1270, and in 1554 and 1702.
