HILDEGARD, ABBESS OF FRAUMUNSTER
Hildegard [Hildegarde, Hildegardis] (b. 828; d. December 23, 856 or 859) was a daughter of the Carolingian East Frankish King Louis the German and his wife Hemma. She was born as her father's first child. After 844, she became abbess of the Münsterschwarzach Monastery, which had been founded in 780 as a private monastery of the Carolingian ruling house.
On July 21, 853, Louis the German founded the Fraumünster Monastery in Zürich [Fraumunster in Zurich], which Hildegard took over as abbess; her younger sister Bertha succeeded her in Münsterschwarzach.
A legend tells of the founding of the new monastery: the two sisters moved into Baldern Castle on the Albis mountain to lead a secluded, pious life. During one of their hikes to Zürich, where they intended to pray in the chapel dedicated to Felix and Regula, a stag with shining antlers guided them through the forest and eventually showed them a spot where they should build a church.
Louis the German is said to have followed this divine summons. It is historically certain that he refounded a monastery already existing on this site, granting it considerable land and the right to its own jurisdiction, and transferring it to Hildegard.
As abbess of Fraumünster, Hildegard died on December 23, 856 (according to other sources, 859); here, too, she was succeeded by Bertha.
