SAINT SIGFRID, BISHOP AND CONFESSOR The holy bishop and confessor  Sigfrid of Wexiö (Vexio [Växjö]) on the Heiligensee (Saints' Lake [Helgasjön]) in Sweden was an Englishman by birth, of noble blood, but of an even nobler heart. According to the martyrologies, Sweden owes him its conversion to Christianity, which is why he is also called their apostle (of the Goths, Swedes, and Normans).  He landed there at the beginning of the 11th century under King Olaf (Olaus) and worked with great effort to spread the Gospel until his blessed end. The cathedral church of Wexiö [Växjö] is said to have been built by him. One day, as he was celebrating Holy Mass, he saw Jesus present in the form of a handsome boy, just as he was showing the Holy Host to the faithful prior to Holy Communion. Among his assistants, the  Bollandists * list the holy chaplain Aschillus , who was consecrated bishop by...

ST SULPICIUS AND ST SERVILIAN, MARTYRS - 20 APRIL

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN APRIL Saints celebrated on the 20th of April WELCOME! SAINT SULPICIUS AND SAINT SERVILIAN, MARTYRS Much of the legend of Saint Sulpicius (Sulpitius) and Saint Servilian ( Servilianus ) has been fabulously spun afterwards. The  Roman Martyrology* states merely  that they were restrained from idol sacrifices and converted by the admonitions and miracles of Saint Domitilla. What is absolutely certain is that they sacrificed their lives for Christ during the reign of Emperor Trajan, either in Rome or in Terracina. Their feast is celebrated in the diocese of Augsburg on April 20 ( ritu simpl .), since their relics were presented to the blessed Hariolphus and Erlalphus, the founders of the collegiate church of Saint Vitus in Ellwangen, by Pope Hadrian. This happened around the year 773. The feast of the translation is celebrated there on May 23rd. This explains why they are not mentioned in Piazza's * work. Church art depicts the story of their conver...

He started his life in a Japanese country village. In his youth he adopted a fashionable atheism that continued into his years of medical studies. He was at his mother’s bedside as she died and later wrote, “I was so sure that there was no such thing as a soul. But my mother’s eyes told me that the human spirit lives after death. I could not but believe this.” He discovered the writings of Blaise Pascal, a famous scientist who passionately believed in God and prayer. Nagai fretted, “How to pray to a God he thought did not exist?” As a medical student, he found convenient lodging with the Moriyama family who had been Catholics for 300 years. The atmosphere of joy in their home touched him. The  Angelus bells from the nearby Cathedral at Urakami found an echo in his heart. The Moriyama’s had a daughter, Midori, a scho...

Egbert was the son of the very powerful Count Theodoric II of Holland. In his early youth he was entrusted to the education of some pious Benedictine monks, whom he delighted with his piety and zeal. After making his profession as a youth, he received the ordination of the subdeaconate. And when, on the feast of Saint Adalbert , his special patron saint, he was prevented by a fever and ardently desired to be able to serve at the altar, he suddenly regained his health after invoking this saint.  When he was subsequently raised to the archiepiscopal see of Trier (Triers, Treves), he was so at home in his office that it seemed as if, in the solitude of his monastery, he had thought of nothing else but the duties of a bishop. He was a friend of the monasteries, watched strictly over his...
