SAINT SULPICIUS AND SAINT SERVILIAN, MARTYRS
Much of the legend of Saint Sulpicius (Sulpitius) and Saint Servilian (Servilianus) has been fabulously spun afterwards. The Roman Martyrology* states merely that they were restrained from idol sacrifices and converted by the admonitions and miracles of Saint Domitilla. What is absolutely certain is that they sacrificed their lives for Christ during the reign of Emperor Trajan, either in Rome or in Terracina. Their feast is celebrated in the diocese of Augsburg on April 20 (ritu simpl.), since their relics were presented to the blessed Hariolphus and Erlalphus, the founders of the collegiate church of Saint Vitus in Ellwangen, by Pope Hadrian. This happened around the year 773. The feast of the translation is celebrated there on May 23rd. This explains why they are not mentioned in Piazza's* work. Church art depicts the story of their conversion, and often also their execution.
