SAINT EVODIUS, BISHOP OF PUY
Saint Evodius was first bishop of Puy (Anicium, Podium, Urbs Vellavorum) in western France (Auvergne). He was the successor of Saint Paulianus as the seventh bishop of Ruessium [Velay].
HE BUILT A FAMOUS CHURCH
St Evodius later built a church two miles from there on the Anis (or Anicium) mountain, under the patronage of the Blessed Virgin. It did develop into a very famous church, which even now - so much later - still features the miraculous image of the Mother of God. Around the year 560 or 570, St Evodius relocated the episcopal seat to this place. Around this church, by and by, the town of Puy (Le-Puy-Notre-Dame, Le-Poy-en-Velai) developed.
HE RELOCATED THE EPISCOPAL SEAT
The said church possesses an original thorn of the crown of the Redeemer, gifted by Louis the Holy. It also keeps the relics of the priest Tertullian of Rome, which are enclosed in a splendid reliquary box, which, according to a very old inscription, is a gift from King Lothar. From Philip the Bold the church received a golden cross containing a piece of the true cross-wood of Christ. Also, a Bible was given by Bishop Theodulf von Orleans, written on vellum, featuring gold and silver letters; an extremely ancient Greek New Testament, if not, as is believed, by St Jerome himself, then at least, judging by the writing style, from St Jerome's time. In addition to these valuable items, it also has a golden crown of Margaret of Provence, wife of St Ludwig, and one of Charlemagne and many more exquisite treasures.
