GREGORY XI., POPE - 27 MARCH

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN MARCH Saints celebrated on the 27th of March WELCOME! GREGORY XI., POPE  ⬅️ Saintly Popes - Index Pierre Roger de Beaufort was born in 1331, at the castle of Maumont in the Dioceses of Limoges; he died March 27, 1378, at Rome.  He was a nephew of Pope Clement VI, who heaped numerous benefices upon him and finally created him cardinal deacon in 1348, when he was only eighteen years of age. As cardinal he attended the University of Perugia, became a skilled canonist and theologian, and gained the esteem of all by his humility and purity of heart.  After the death of Urban V, the cardinals unanimously elected him pope at Avignon, on December, 1370. He chose the name of Gregory XI, had himself ordained priest on January 4, 1371, and was crowned pope on the following day.  Immediately on his accession he attempted to reconcile the Kings of France and England, but failed. He succeeded, however, in pacifying Castile, Aragon, Navarre, Sicily, ...

LEO V., POPE - 4 FEBRUARY

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN FEBRUARY Saints celebrated on the 4th of February LEO V., POPE  ⬅️ Saintly Popes - Index Very little is known of him. We have no certainty either as to when he was elected or as to exactly how long he reigned. It is highly probable that he was pope during August, 903. He was a native of Priapi, a small place in the district of Ardea.  When chosen he was not one of the cardinal-priests of Rome, but was attached to some church outside the City. Hence, in contemporary catalogues of the popes he is called a presbiter forensis.  Auxilius, a writer of the time, says that he held "the rudder of the Holy Roman Church" for thirty days, and that "he was a man of God and of praiseworthy life and holiness." Except that he issued a Bull exempting the canons of Bologna from the payment of taxes, we know of nothing that he did as pope.  The circumstances of his death are as obscure as those of his life. After a pontificate of somewhat over a month he...

PASCHAL II., POPE - 21 JANUARY

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN JANUARY Saints celebrated on the 21st of January WELCOME! PASCHAL II., POPE  ⬅️ Saintly Popes - Index Paschal II (Rainerius), succeeded Urban II, and reigned from August 13, 1099, till he died at Rome,  January 21, 1118.  Born in central Italy, he was received at an early age as a monk in Cluny. In his twentieth year he was sent on business of the monastery to Rome, and was retained at the papal court by Gregory VII, and made Cardinal-Priest of St Clement's church.  It was in this church that the conclave met after the death of Pope Urban, and Cardinal Rainerius was the unanimous choice of the sacred college.  He protested vigorously against his election, maintaining, with some justice, that his monastic training had not fitted him to deal with the weighty problems which confronted the papacy in that troublous age. His protestations were disregarded by his colleagues, and he was consecrated the following day in St Peter's.  O...

EUGENE II., POPE - 27 AUGUST

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN AUGUST Saints celebrated on the 27th of August EUGENE II., POPE  ⬅️ Saintly Popes - Index He was elected June 6, 824; died August 27, 827. On the death of Paschal I (February - May, 824) there took place a divided election.  The late pope had wisely endeavoured to curb the rapidly increasing power of the Roman nobility, who, to strengthen their position against him, had turned for support to the Frankish power. When he died these nobles made strenuous efforts to replace him by a candidate of their own; and despite the fact that the clergy put forward a candidate likely to continue the policy of Paschal the nobles were successful in their attempt. They secured the consecration of Eugene, archpriest of S. Sabina on the Aventine, although by a decree of the Roman Council of 769, under Stephen IV, they had no right to a real share in a papal election.  Their candidate is stated, in earlier editions of the "Liber Pontificalis", to have been the ...

ST SALABERGA, WIDOW AND ABBESS - 22 SEPTEMBER

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN SEPTEMBER Saints celebrated on the 22nd of September WELCOME! SAINT SALABERGA, WIDOW AND ABBESS   Salaberga's parents, Gundoinus and Saretrudis (otherwise also called Bertoldus and Bertildis), were very wealthy. She had two brothers, Lendulnus Bodo, later Bishop of Toul, and Fulcnisus Bodo. Her birthplace was Orney, diocese of Langres.  As a virgin she went blind, but around the year 617 the holy Abbot  Eustasius of Luxeuil cured her by means of prayer and consecrated oil, which he applied to  her sick eyes. Thereupon she had her eyesight restored. The miracle probably happened on the Meuse estate (Mosa), where the parents stayed.  Soon after, her parents gave her for marriage to a nobleman named Richrammus. She agreed, although she would have preferred to take the veil. Her husband died just two months after the wedding. But she had to get married a second time. So her wish to go to the monastery in Remiremont remained unfulfill...

INNOCENT VIII., POPE - 25 JULY

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN JULY Saints celebrated on the 25th of July INNOCENT VIII., POPE  ⬅️ Saintly Popes - Index Giovanni Battista Cibo was born at Genoa, 1432; elected August 29, 1484; died at Rome, July 25, 1492. He was the son of the Roman senator, Aran Cibo, and Teodorina de' Mari. After a licentious youth, during which he had two illegitimate children, Franceschetto and Teodorina, he took orders and entered the service of Cardinal Calandrini.  He was made Bishop of Savona in 1467, but exchanged this see in 1472 for that of Molfetta in south-eastern Italy and was raised to the cardinalate the following year. At the conclave of 1484, he signed, like all the other cardinals present, the election capitulation which was to bind the future pope. Its primary object was to safeguard the personal interests of the electors.  The choice fell on Cibo himself who, in honour of his countryman, Innocent IV, assumed the name of Innocent VIII. His success in the conclave, as...

BONIFACE II., POPE - 17 OCTOBER

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN OCTOBER Saints celebrated on the 17th of October BONIFACE II., POPE  ⬅️ Saintly Popes - Index He was elected September 17, 530 and died October 17, 532. In calling him the son of Sigisbald, the "Liber Pontificalis" makes first mention of a pope's Germanic ancestry.  Boniface served the Roman Church from early youth. During the reign of Pope Felix IV, he was archdeacon and a personage of considerable influence with the ecclesiastical and civil authorities. His elevation to the papacy is remarkable as offering an unquestionable example of the nomination of a pope by his predecessor, without even the formality of an election.  Felix IV apprehending death and fearing a contest for the papacy between Roman and Gothic factions, gathered about him several of his clergy and a number of Roman Senators and patricians who happened to be near. In their presence, he solemnly conferred on his aged archdeacon the pallium of papal sovereignty, proclaiming ...

OTTO OF FREISING, BISHOP - 22 SEPTEMBER

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN SEPTEMBER Saints celebrated on the 22nd of September OTTO OF FREISING, BISHOP Otto (Otho) was a famous bishop, also called the "Great". He was a son of St Leopold, Margrave of Austria, and his wife Agnes, and was born on December 5, 1109. Determined at an early age to become a clergyman, he undertook studies in Paris, and after completing them - although he already held the position of provost of Klosterneuburg at that time - in order to die to the world and to live only with God, he entered the thriving Cistercian monastery Morimund, where he took his vows in 1127.  This was followed by even more studies at the University of Paris. In 1131 Otto had to take over the leadership of the Morimund monastery, which he held for six years. In the meantime Leopold converted the secular monastery of Klosterneuburg into a regular one and, at his request, also granted his pious son the introduction of the Cistercian order into Austria. This is how the  Heil...

SERGIUS II., POPE - 27 JANUARY

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN JANUARY Saints celebrated on the 27th of January SERGIUS II., POPE  ⬅️ Saintly Popes - Index His date of birth is unknown; he was consecrated in 844, apparently in January; he died January 27, 847. He was of noble birth, and belonged to a family which gave two other popes to the Church.  Educated in the schola cantorum, he was patronised by several popes, and was ordained Cardinal-priest of the Church of SS. Martin and Sylvester by Paschal. Under Gregory IV, whom he succeeded, he became archpriest.  At a preliminary meeting to designate a successor to Gregory, the name of Sergius was accepted by the majority; but a mob endeavoured by force to place a deacon, John, upon the pontifical throne. He was, however, shut up in a monastery, and Sergius was duly consecrated.  From one obviously very partial edition of the "Liber Pontificalis" it would appear that Sergius, owing to devotion to the pleasures of the table, had no taste for business...

CELESTINE III., POPE - 8 JANUARY

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN JANUARY Saints celebrated on the 8th of January WELCOME! CELESTINE III., POPE  ⬅️ Saintly Popes - Index Giacinto Bobone was the first of the Roman Orsini to ascend the Chair of Peter. He was born about 1106; he died at Rome, January 8, 1198. He was forty-seven years a cardinal when, in his eighty-fifth year, he was elected (March 30, 1191) successor of Clement III; being only a deacon he was ordained priest (April 13) and consecrated bishop the next day, respectively Holy Saturday and Easter.  The following day he anointed and crowned King Henry VI of Germany as emperor, and as empress his queen Constantia. The king was then on his way to Southern Italy to enforce against Tancred the claims of Constantia to the crown of the two Sicilies.  The Roman people, however, did not permit the aforementioned solemnities to take place until both pope and king had aided them to satisfy their wrath against the neighbouring Tusculum. The town was levelle...

BENEDICT III., POPE - 17 APRIL

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN APRIL Saints celebrated on the 17th of April BENEDICT III., POPE  ⬅️ Saintly Popes - Index His date of birth is unknown; he died April 17, 858. The election of the learned and ascetic Roman, Benedict, the son of Peter, was a troubled one. On the death of Leo IV (July 17, 855) Benedict was chosen to succeed him, and envoys were despatched to secure the ratification of the decree of election by the Emperors Lothaire and Louis II.  But the legates betrayed their trust and allowed themselves to be influenced in favour of the ambitious and excommunicated Cardinal Anastasius. The imperial missi, gained over in turn by them, endeavoured to force Anastasius on the Roman Church. Benedict was insulted and imprisoned. Most of the clergy and people, however, remained true to him, and the missi had to yield.  Benedict was accordingly consecrated on September 29, or October 6, 855, and though his rival was condemned by a synod, he admitted him to lay com...
