SAINT MECHTHILD OF SPONHEIM, ANCHORESS Saint Mechthild (Mechtildis, Mathilda) was an Anchoress of the Benedictine Abbey of Sponheim (Burg-Sponheim) in the diocese of Mainz. She died on February 26, 1154 and is called "saint" by many. She is often confused with Mathildis (Mechthild) of Diessen SHE WAS THE SISTER OF ABBOT BETHELMUS According to Migne, she was a sister of Abbot Bethelmus of Sponheim. Her occupation was prayer, manual labour, and penance. The church in which she is buried is the only remnant of the former monastery buildings.
