SAINT TETRICUS, BISHOP OF AUXERRE, MARTYR
Saint Tetricus, who is commemorated on April 12, April 16, and March 17, ruled the church of Auxerre (Autissiodorum) for just over 15 years. Prior to his appointment as Bishop of Auxerre, Tetricus had led the Abbey of St. Germain with wisdom and gentleness. Zeal in the preaching office, strict discipline towards the clergy subordinate to him, and piety and charity were the pillars of his holy life.
An unworthy clergyman, the Archdeacon Regenfridus, murdered him in his sleep. Mabillon* states that Tetricus' death occurred in A.D. 709.
One of the astonishing anectdotes of his life runs thus: following the request of the rebellious son of King Chlotar III, Chramnus, Tetricus proclaimed his sad end in three passages from Scripture, which he opened one after the other. The passages in question were: Isaiah 5: 4. 5. Matthew 7:26 and 1 Thessalonians 5: 3, 4 (II. 95).
