ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN APRIL
Saints celebrated on the 24th of April
The name Elizabeth is derived from the Hebrew Elischeba = God of oaths; who swears by God, d. h. who worships God; worshipper. German form: Elisabeth, French: Elise. Spanish: Isabella.
Saint Elizabeth had the gift of miracles in a high degree, hence her nickname Thaumaturga, i.e. i. the “miracle worker”. She healed all kinds of illnesses, was a nurturing mother to orphans, a lovingly helpful friend to the poor, a wise counselor to widows, and a comforter and helper to all the oppressed and those suffering injustice.
Although Elizabeth was small and slender of body, she subjected herself to the most rigorous penances, wore only one dress all year round, even when it was cold, never washed her body, denied herself bread for years, fasted for forty days like Moses and her Redeemer, and for three years was completely absorbed in God, her eyes lifted constantly to heaven to contemplate his greatness and his beauty. After such a holy life, countless miracles and blessed passing she was venerated in the Greek and Latin churches from her death onwards (III. 272.).
