WELCOME!
SAINT SEBASTIAN NAM, MARTYR
Sebastian (Sebastianus) Nam [Sebastian Nam I-gwan (Yi-Kwan Nam)], commemorated on September 26, a noble Korean, was exiled with his family in 1801. At that time he knew nothing more about Christianity than the Lord's Prayer and the Angelic Salutation, which he nevertheless prayed daily.
During a serious illness he called a Christian to his bedside to be instructed in the faith. Sebastian was subsequently baptized. Recalled from exile, he was one of those who went to the border to bring in the missionaries and hide them in his house. During the ongoing persecution of Christians Sebastian was eventually betrayed. He and his wife were arrested and thrown into prison. Since he neither wanted to incriminate the other Christians nor hand over the holy books, he was tortured several times - first in Kientso and then in Kempon. With admirable joy he met his martyr's death [by beheading] on September 26 1839, at the age of sixty.
[Referred to as "Venerable" in the above article, Sebastian was beatified on July 5, 1925, by Pope Pius XI and canonized on May 6, 1984, by Pope John Paul II. The Korean martyrs' joint feast is celebrated on September 20.]
