SAINT FEAST DAY 22 OCTOBER: ST JOHN PAUL II.

WELCOME!

SAINT JOHN PAUL II., POPE

Karol Wojtyla’s story was in many ways that of the Church in the 20th century. He lived under the false gods of National Socialism and Communism, eventually triumphing over both.

Although his pontificate coincided with a profound crisis in western Christianity, worldwide Catholicism grew rapidly. Saint John Paul II guided the Church firmly into the new millennium.

CHILDHOOD

He was born in Wadowice, near Krakow, in 1920, the youngest of three children of Karol and Emilia Wojtyla. A doctor reportedly advised Emilia to have an abortion, insisting that she would not give birth to a live child. But, of course, she refused.

Emilia died when Karol was just eight and, along with the premature deaths of his sister and brother, this would deeply affect him. His father died in 1941. And so, he later reflected, by 20 he had lost his entire close family.

PRIESTHOOD

When the Second World War broke out Karol worked as a manual labourer in a limestone quarry, among other jobs. He also saved the lives of a number of Jewish people from the Nazis.

The occupiers left on January 17 1945 and Karol was among the first to enter the ruins of the seminary in order to rebuild it. He was ordained on All Saints Day 1946. After studying in Rome he taught theology at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow and the Catholic University of Lublin.

EPISCOPATE

Pius XII. made him an auxilliary bishop in 1958. He played a decisive role at the Second Vatican Council, contributing to two of the Council’s most significant documents, Dignitatis Humanae, the Decree on Religious Freedom, and Gaudium et Spes, the Pastoral Constitution of the Church in the Modern World.

PAPACY

On October 16, 1978 he became the first non-Italian elected to the papacy in 455 years. His election was a huge surprise and a great boost to the Polish people, then undergoing a national crisis that would culminate, in 1989, with the overthrow of Communism across eastern Europe.

His first trip to Poland in June 1979 illustrated to the country’s totalitarian rulers that the country’s Catholic faith was as unshakeable as ever. At least a million Poles are expected to make the journey to Rome for the canonisation of John Paul II. on Divine Mercy Sunday – a feast the pope himself instituted in the year 2000.”

FATIMA APPARITION - 13 AUGUST

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN AUGUST Saints celebrated on the 13th of August Marian Feast Days WELCOME! FATIMA APPARITION - AUGUST 13 The Fatima Children “BUT IN THE END MY IMMACULATE HEART WILL TRIUMPH.” But in the end my Immaculate Heart will triumph. The Holy Father will consecrate Russia to me; it will be converted, and a certain period of peace will be granted to the world. THE AUGUST 13 EVENTS On August 13, the children were in jail at Ourem. The civil administrator threatened to boil them in oil if they did not tell the Lady’s secret. Though badly frightened, they could not think of disobeying our Lady. In disgust, the administrator finally freed them. A large number of people, not knowing that the children had been kidnapped, went to the Cova for the scheduled appearance of the Lady. At noon, there was a loud clap of thunder. Then, according to an eyewitness: “Right after the thunder came a flash, and immediately we all noticed a little cloud, very white, beautiful and bright,...

ST JOHN BERCHMANS, RELIGIOUS - 13 AUGUST

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN AUGUST Saints celebrated on the 13th of August WELCOME! SAINT JOHN BERCHMANS, RELIGIOUS   (Patron Saint of Altar Servers.) The eldest boy of a poor cordwainer, in a small Belgian town, John was ever a dutiful, prayerful, and studious child. Our Lord called him when but young to leave his father and his father’s house, to serve Him in the Society of Jesus.  And because he was so good a son, it cost his father much to give him up to God; but he was too good a Christian to refuse outright.  HE WAS SENT TO ROME John had hardly taken his religious vows when he was sent to the centre of Christendom, the holy city of Rome. His modesty, his purity, shone out as great virtue always does; and the young laymen who attended the lectures would come to gaze upon his beautiful and holy face, and go away the better for the sight. GREAT VIRTUE Three short years, and his last sickness found him sighing for heaven, and three days before the great feast of Mar...
