WELCOME!

SAINT WALTER, ABBOT OF ST. PETER

Monastery yard in the snow

Saint Walter (Gualterius, Galterus, Galterius, Gualterus, Gauterus, French: Gautier or Gauthier) was born into a noble family in Guyenne (Aquitaine) around the year 990. His father Raymond and his mother Gualburga (Walburgis) raised him with great care. Later he came under the guidance of the pious Israel, canon regular of Dorat (Scotoria) in the diocese of Limoges, and then entered the canonry himself. There he distinguished himself by his pious conduct; he sought to imitate the particular virtues of all, in order to gather within himself the good he found in everyone. Later, he was elected abbot of Lesterp (Stirps, Stirpum)[Saint-Pierre de Lesterps (St. Peter)].

In this new sphere of activity, he behaved with such great wisdom toward everyone that each individual considered himself indebted to him as his special patron, and at the same time, all clung to him with shared love. He became known as a preacher of penance, and around the year 1055 Pope Victor II granted him special powers and privileges for the absolution of penitents. For 38 years, presided over his abbey with great love, physically blind for the last seven years, but all the more mentally vigorous. Finally, he went to his eternal reward on May 11, 1070. Soon after his death, his veneration as a "Blessed" began. The epithet "Saint" was also applied to him as early as 1091. The Benedictines commemorate him in some places on April 13; but he is usually venerated on May 11. (II. 701.)

The civil administrator threatened to boil them in oil if they did not tell the Lady’s secret. Though badly frightened, they could not think of disobeying our Lady. In disgust, the administrator finally freed them. A large number of people, not knowing that the children had been kidnapped, went to the Cova for the scheduled appearance of the Lady. At noon, there was a loud clap of thunder.
