40 MARTYRS OF ENGLAND AND WALES

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN MAY Saints celebrated on the 4th of May WELCOME! 40 MARTYRS OF ENGLAND AND WALES St Margaret Clitherow's Martyrdom ➡️ The 85 Martyrs of England and Wales - List of their Names FEAST DAY: MAY 4 (FORMERLY OCTOBER 25) The English Martyrs are those English Catholics who suffered death for the faith from the time of Henry VIII’s divorce and his breach with Rome in the early 1530s. They were a very disparate group of people – many were priests executed for saying Mass, others laity who helped them, or simply refused to deny their faith under persecution. They came from all classes of society, rich and poor, educated and unlettered; but they were alike in placing their faith above any material advantage, and indeed valuing it more than life itself. Their witness to Christ is one of the glories of the Church in England. THE LIST OF THESE HOLY MARTYRS: (Some links are yet to be added. SAINT POEMEN, DESERT FATHER  This great light among the ancient fathers of the desert forsook the world about the year 385, and retired into the great wilderness of Scete, in Egypt.  He often passed several days, sometimes a whole week, without eating; but it was his constant advice to others that their fasts should be moderate, but constant, and that they should take some nourishment every day. It was a maxim with him, that no monk ought ever to taste wine, or to seek any superfluous gratification of the senses.  THE BROTHERS RETIRED TO TERENUTHI The barbarians ravaging Scete in 395, he and his brothers retired to Terenuthi, near an old temple of idols, and lived there for several years. SAINT ZEPHYRINUS, POPE AND MARTYR  ⬅️ Saintly Popes - Index Saint Zephyrinus, a native of Rome, succeeded Victor in the pontificate, in the year 202, in which Severus raised the fifth most bloody persecution against the church, which continued, not for two years only, as Dodwell imagined; but to the death of that emperor in 211, as Ruinart, Berti, and others prove from Sulpicius Severus, and other authorities.  HE WAS THE SUPPORT AND COMFORT OF THE DISTRESSED FLOCK Under this furious storm this holy pastor was the support and comfort of the distressed flock of Christ, and he suffered by charity and compassion what every confessor underwent. The triumphs of the martyrs were indeed his joy, but his heart received many deep wounds from the fall of apostates and heretics. Neither did this latter affliction cease by the peace which Caracalla restored to the church, and which was not disturbed by...
