40 MARTYRS OF ENGLAND AND WALES
St Margaret Clitherow's Martyrdom |
➡️ The 85 Martyrs of England and Wales - List of their Names
FEAST DAY: MAY 4 (FORMERLY OCTOBER 25)
The English Martyrs are those English Catholics who suffered death for the faith from the time of Henry VIII’s divorce and his breach with Rome in the early 1530s. They were a very disparate group of people – many were priests executed for saying Mass, others laity who helped them, or simply refused to deny their faith under persecution. They came from all classes of society, rich and poor, educated and unlettered; but they were alike in placing their faith above any material advantage, and indeed valuing it more than life itself. Their witness to Christ is one of the glories of the Church in England.
