SAINT AEGIL, ABBOT
The abbot Aegil (Aegilis), whom Raderus lists among the “saints” in his Bavaria sancta [Encyclopedia of Saints], was born in Bavaria [in South Germany]. He became the abbot of Fulda.
From an early age, his parents entrusted him to the saintly Abbot Sturmius of Fulda for his education.
When Aegil became abbot - despite all the insight and wisdom he possessed - did he never undertake anything of any importance without consulting his fellow monks. In this way he brought about a wonderful unity and harmony of hearts in his monastery.
Already during his lifetime, he had the grave prepared that was to receive his body after his death and himself affixed his epitaph over it. When he died in 822, the monastery was in the most beautiful bloom.
In the Bavaria sancta there is a pictorial representation of Aegil in which he is shown in the habit of an abbot ordering the construction of the monastery and supervising the workmen. Some hagiographers list his name on August 6, others on November 28.
