SAINT PAPULUS, MARTYR
The discovery of Saint Papulus' (Papolus) relics is celebrated on September 21, but his burial at the church of Saint Saturninus in Toulouse on March 26. According to Sanssajus*, he is venerated as a bishop on November 3. The entry in this source is not entirely correct since Saint Papulus was not a bishop. Grevenus* mentions him on May 18, also with the erroneous designation "bishop".
Croiset*, Migne*, Butler* and other sources, however, list him for what he really was: a priest and martyr. Papulus was the faithful helper of Saint Saturninus (Sernin) whom he strongly supported in his apostolic work in Languedoc and Gascony, but mainly in Toulouse. Papulus is therefore also known as the first pastor of Toulouse. During the Diocletian persecution (others say, of Decian), Papulus was killed for his faith in the Lauragais region of Languedoc, victim of the hatred of the pagan priests. A church with an abbey built at the place of his death has preserved his name and his merits. From A.D. 1317 to 1789, it was even the seat of a bishop (Saint Papoul in the upper Languedoc)(Maj. IV. 136).
