NICHOLAS WISEMAN, ARCHBISHOP OF WESTMINSTER - 15 FEBRUARY

NICHOLAS WISEMAN, ARCHBISHOP OF WESTMINSTER Nicholas Patrick Stephen Wiseman was born August 2, 1802, Seville, Spain; he died February 15, 1865, London, England). The first cardinal resident in England since the Reformation and the first archbishop of Westminster, Cardinal Wiseman was one of the chief architects of the 19th-century revival of Roman Catholicism in England. Wiseman’s Irish parents emigrated to Spain, but after his father died, he and his mother went home to County Waterford. He received his doctorate in 1824 and was appointed professor of Oriental languages at the University of Rome and rector of the English College there in 1828. ST JEAN LOUIS BONNARD HUONG, MISSIONARY AND MARTYR - 1 MAY

  ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN MAY Saints celebrated on the 1st of May WELCOME! SAINT JEAN LOUIS BONNARD, MISSIONARY AND MARTYR John Ludovicus Bonnard was a martyr in Tonkin [Vietnam], who, according to Pachtler* (p. 354) , was beheaded on May 1, 1852. His beatification process is pending in Rome. [Since the original time of writing in the 19th century, this holy martyr has been beatified and canonised.]  The "New Palms of Victory of Catholic Martyrs," with a preface by His Eminence Cardinal Wiseman , provide a detailed account of his entire life and work, as well as his martyrdom (pp. 150-174). According to this, the Frenchman Jean Louis Bonnard , who had the Anamitic name Huong , was born in Saint Christot-en-Sarret on May 1, 1824, so that both his earthly and his heavenly birthday fall on the same day of the month.  Archbishop M. MARIA MARGARETHA WALTHER, VIRGIN - 17 MARCH

  ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN MARCH Saints celebrated on the 17th of March WELCOME! MARIA MARGARETHA WALTHER, VIRGIN Maria Margaretha Walther (March 17), of Sterzing in Tyrol, made her holy profession in the Poor Clares' Convent in Brixen on October 23, 1708. She excelled in various virtues, but died after just under seven years while triumphing over all diabolical wiles, on March 17, 1715. (J. M. R.) BL. MEGINHARD, ABBOT OF HERSFELD - 26 SEPTEMBER

  ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN SEPTEMBER Saints celebrated on the 26th of September WELCOME! BLESSED MEGINHARD, ABBOT OF HERSFELD Monastery yard in the snow Blessed Meginhard (Meginhardus, Meginherus), commemorated on  September 26 , was a mid-eleventh century Abbot of Hersfeld (Herocampia) on the Fulda ( Hersfeld is not to be confused with the Hirschfeld monastery). As such, he succeeded Abbot Rudolf in 1035, who had become Bishop of Paderborn as successor to Meinwerk . Meginhard rebuilt the monastery, which had been destroyed by fire in 1037, and transferred the relics of both  Saint Wigbert and  Saint Lullus to the newly built church. He is also famous for his strict discipline and his zeal for the sciences. The historian Lambert of Aschaffenburg (autor of De rebus gestis Germanorum etc.) entered the order when Meginhard was in charge. SAINT DECLAN, BISHOP ⬅️ Litany of the Irish Saints Saint Declan , who through his father belonged to the royal dynasty of the Déisi Muman, is remembered as the fifth-century Munster saint who evangelised the Irish before  Saint Patrick , who converted the Déisi and who founded the monastery of Ardmore in Wexford (which now belongs to County Waterford ). ST FELIM, BISHOP OF KILMORE - 9 AUGUST

  ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN AUGUST Saints celebrated on the 9th of August WELCOME! SAINT FELIM, BISHOP OF KILMORE ⬅️ Litany of the Irish Saints ⬅️ List: Irish Confessors and Martyrs Saint Felim ( Fedlimid ) lived in the sixth century and was Bishop of Kilmore. He is the patron saint of the Kilmore diocese. Felim became a hermit living near Kilmore, County Cavan, where he later founded a monastery. According to the Martyrology of Tallaght and Martyrology of Donegal his feast day is August 3 but the other Calendars list it on August 9. PRAYER: Lord of glory, in the self-abasement of your Son you gave us an example that we are to follow; through the intercession of your bishop Saint Felim, take from your Church all that encumbers it and make us ready to serve you freedom and in love. ST NATHY, BISHOP - 9 AUGUST

  ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN AUGUST Saints celebrated on the 9th of August WELCOME! SAINT NATHY, BISHOP ⬅️ Litany of the Irish Saints Saint Nathy , who had a wide reputation for holiness, lived in the sixth century. He was a pupil of Saint Finian of Clonard and was in charge of the monastery of Achonry.  PRAYER: God, faithful and true, by the life, death and resurrection of your Son you have redeemed the entire creation and made known to us the mystery of your divine love; grant that, after the example of your bishop Saint Nathy, we may become Christ's faithful disciples and grow in the knowledge of your truth. SAINT PHILIP MINH, PRIEST AND MARTYR - 19 JUNE

  ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN JUNE Saints celebrated on the 19th of June WELCOME! SAINT PHILIP MINH, MARTYR Born in 1815, Saint Philip Minh studied at College General in Penang from 1840 to 1846 before returning to Vietnam to serve as a priest. In 1853, he was martyred by beheading for refusing to trample the cross, deny his faith, or betray fellow priests. He is buried  in Cai-mong, Vietnam. His relics are venerated at College General, and he was canonised by  Pope John Paul II   in 1988. The Church celebrates his feast day today. PRAYER: Saint Philip Minh and Companions, faithful servants of the Gospel, you chose Christ over comfort, and truth over fear. SAINT MUREDACH, BISHOP OF KILLALA ⬅️ List: Irish Confessors and Martyrs Saint Muredach  (Murtagh) was a disciple of Saint Patrick and Bishop of Killala during the sixth century. Saint Muredach may also be founder of the monastery of Inishmurray off the Sligo coast. PRAYER: Lord God, each year on the feast of Saint Muredach, your you recall to our minds the love with which you care for us, the providence that sustains our lives; build up, we pray, your Church by the working of your Spirit among us and make us instruments of your Gospel in the world. ST FIACRE, RELIGIOUS - 30 AUGUST

  ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN AUGUST Saints celebrated on the 30th of August WELCOME! SAINT FIACRE, RELIGIOUS Monastery yard in the snow Saint Fiacre  was an Irish monk who left his home country to preach the gospel in France, eventually settling at Meaux where he became renowned for his healing gifts. He established a hermitage and hospice near the town of Meaux east of Paris. Saint Fiacre went to his eternal reward in 670. His feast day in Ireland is celebrated on August 30. PRAYER: Lord, our Creator and loving God, in the lifework of Saint Fiacre you have shown your power to heal the ravages of disease and in the wilderness to bring forth life; give us, we pray, the vision of faith, to see your hand in the beauty of creation and to recognise your face in all who suffer. ST FACHTNA, BISHOP - 13 AUGUST

SAINT FACHTNA, BISHOP  ⬅️ Litany of the Irish Saints Saint Fachtna, the founder of the monastery of Rosscarberry (Rosscarbery, Ros Ailithir), County Cork, was renowned for his wisdom and preaching. He went to his eternal reward c. 600. PRAYER: Lord, who never cease to feed your people, by your word of life; grant that, as once, through the labours of Saint Fachtna, you gathered disciples who would devote themselves to the study of the scriptures, so today make us eager to know you and to find you in the Gospel we proclaim. ST AILBE, BISHOP - 12 SEPTEMBER

Albeus , Saint Elvis) was the sixth-century founder and bishop of the monastery and diocese of Emly and one of the great 'apostles of the faith' in Munster. He went to his eternal reward in 528. PRAYER: Lord, you nourished the household of the Church through the merits and labours of Saint Ailbe; watch over the flock, we pray, and endow it with your choicest gifts. ST DEINIOL, BISHOP OF BANGOR - 11 SEPTEMBER

  ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN NOVEMBER Saints celebrated on the 23rd of November WELCOME! SAINT DEINIOL, BISHOP OF BANGOR  Saint Deiniol ( Daniel ) was a Welsh prince who became the first Bishop of Bangor. Consecrated by Saint David in 545, Deiniol built up the Church in this region by founding monastic communities and churches. The present Cathedral of Bangor is said to have been erected where his monastery once stood. Saint Deiniol died at Bangor Fawr in 584 but was buried at Bardsey Island. He is commemorated on November 23 and September 11. PRAYER: Grant, Lord, we pray, that the spirit of prayer fostered by Saint Deiniol, a father of religious life in Wales, may renew and inspire all who gather to celebrate your praise. ST ELOQUIUS, ABBOT - 3 DECEMBER

  ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN DECEMBER   Saints celebrated on the 3rd of December   WELCOME! SAINT ELOQUIUS, ABBOT From Ireland, Saint Eloquius travelled to France along with Fursey ,  Foillan  and  Ultan , and others. At the request of King Clovis, he built a monastery at Laigni, staffed it with monks, and presided over it as its first abbot. Some of the monks, however, were dissatisfied with his insistence on strict monastic discipline, and tried to do away with him. Thereupon he left with some of the pious friars and lived as a hermit near Grimay. He died there in 570 and was glorified by miracles both in life and after death. His body was later brought to the monastery of Baussoire (Diocese of Namur). BLESSED COLUMBA MARMION, ABBOT ⬅️ Litany of the Irish Saints Blessed Columba Marmion (born April 1, 1858) was an Irishman who became a Benedictine of the Abbey of Maredsous in Belgium. A great teacher, preacher and writer whose spiritual works have become Christian classics, he was beatified by  Pope Saint John Paul II   on September 3, 2000. Blessed Columba went to his eternal reward on January 30, 1923. In Ireland, his feast day is celebrated on October 3. ST CANICE, ABBOT - 11 OCTOBER

  ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN OCTOBER Saints celebrated on the 11th of October WELCOME! SAINT CANICE, ABBOT ⬅️ Litany of the Irish Saints Born in the early 6th century, Saint Canice (Canicus) (Cainnech of Aghaboe) ( Kenny ) joined Saint Finian 's monastic school at Clonard as a pupil. He was one of the students who became known as the Twelve Apostles of Ireland . In 565, Saint Canice went on to become a friend and disciple of  Saint Columba in Scotland. He is called Saint Kenneth in Scotland. He founded the church of Kilkenny and died about the year 600. PRAYER:  O God of mercy, in joy and in sorrow, turn our minds and hearts to you, and with the abbot Saint Canice to plead for us, grant that nothing, in life or in death, may sever us from your love. SAINT FLANNAN, BISHOP OF KILLALOE ⬅️ Litany of the Irish Saints Saint Flannan (Flannán mac Toirdelbaig) was born around 759 and came from the royal family of Thomond. He joined Molua's monastery at Killaloe. He was a great preacher and eventually became the first Bishop of Killaloe.
