PLECTRUDIS, WIDOW - 11 AUGUST

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN AUGUST Saints celebrated on the 11th August WELCOME! PLECTRUDIS, WIDOW Plectrudis ( Plicthrudis, Pleihtrut ), daughter of Duke Grimoald of Bavaria, was the first and lawful wife of the Frankish majordomo [Mayor of the Palace] Pepin of Heristal. When he divorced her to marry his concubine Albiz (Algais),  Saint Lambert of Liège became a martyr for the sanctity and unity of marriage. After her husband's death in 714, she briefly continued his office and held her stepson Charles Martel prisoner. However, he managed to escape from imprisonment and assume his father's dignity, whereupon Plectrudis settled permanently at Saint Mary's of the Capitol (St. Maria vom Capitol) in Cologne, which church she built and endowed. She is also (Rettb. I. 306) the founder of the Süsteren monastery in the Meusegau (anno 711) and probably also of  Andoin in the Ardennes. Her son Grimoald, until then majordomo in Burgundy, was murdered in April of 714 while prayin...

This holy bishop in Friesland, an Anglo-Saxon, was a disciple of Saint Egbertus. (His name is also spelled Suithbertus, Suidbertus, Swibertus, Suuibertus , and Suuitbrecht . Through his apostolic activity, accompanied by numerous miracles (he healed the blind, the lame, the possessed, brought a drowned man back to life, etc.), he truly shone like a star, which his mother had seen him as even before his birth, and earned the honorary title of "Apostle of the Frisians and Boructuarii " (the inhabitants of the former County of Berg).  Saint Radbod writes of him: "In everything he taught, he gave his listeners an example of himself." He was ordained a bishop around 693 by Bishop Wilfrid of York, who was then living as an exile in Mercia. When the pagan Saxons destroyed his mission in 694, ...

THE MIRACULOUS RESCUE OF ST LUDGER'S MOTHER

WELCOME!     The Miraculous Rescue of  Saint Ludger 's Mother Saint Ludger After the death of the noble Wursing , his son Thiadgrim became lord of his father's estate and married Liafburga , a Christian, daughter of a certain Nodradus and Adelburga .  Liafburga had been rescued from certain death as a newborn child by a miraculous act of providence. Adelburga's mother-in-law, a bitter pagan, reproached her Christian daughter-in-law for bearing only daughters and no male heirs; she claimed this was a just punishment for her having turned her back on the ancient pagan gods by becoming a Christian. When the young Liafburga was born, the mother-in-law gave orders to some servants, snorting with rage, to tear the child away from its mother and to kill it immediately, before it had even suckled at her mother's breast. According to Frisian law, it was permissible to kill a child as long as it had not yet consumed any earthly food, a strange regulation that w...

BURCHARD, ARCHBISHOP OF BOURGES - 3 SEPTEMBER

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN SEPTEMBER Saints celebrated on the 3rd of September WELCOME! BURCHARD, ARCHBISHOP OF BOURGES Some hagiographers list " Burchard, Archbishop of Bourges " ( Burcardus ) on September 3) According to those sources, he was first a  Cistercian  monk and then Archbishop of Bourges. BL. MANFRED OF RIVA, HERMIT - 28 JANUARY

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN JANUARY Saints celebrated on the 28th of January WELCOME! BLESSED MANFRED OF RIVA, HERMIT This blessed Manfred, whose name means " protection of men ," is a folk saint about whom little can be reported with certainty. It is not known when he lived or when he died. Some writers suggest that Manfred went to his eternal reward in 1430, but he seems to have flourished much earlier than that. A native of Milan, he adopted the habit of a hermit after receiving priestly ordination and lived for many years in a cave near Riva on Lake Como, subsisting only on herbs and the alms of good people. When he died, the bells of the nearest village are said to have started to ring by themselves. His mortal remains are venerated in Riva in the Church of Saint Vitalis . Here, his feast is celebrated annually. Each year, it attracts large crowds.   (Information from  Stadler 's Complete Encyclopedia of Saints,  Volume  4, Augsburg, 1875, p. 75) Stadler's C...
