BALDERICUS, BISHOP OF UTRECHT
Balderic (Baldericus) (6 April), a son of Count Rixfried, born in Kleve (Cleves), was the 15th Bishop of Utrecht (Ultraiectum) and the immediate successor of Saint Radbod, who died in 917.
After leading his bishopric for 59 years, he died at a very old age in 977. According to Butler* (XIV. 488), he suffered greatly from the Danish invasions, had Utrecht fortified, and generally sought to help his subjects in every way possible. The so-called
Boldrechttoorn (Boldrecht Gate) still stands in Utrecht as a monument to his zeal. In 948, he attended the Synod of Ingelheim (not far from Mainz). In 966, he travelled to Italy to visit Emperor Otto, from whom he received, among other things, permission to mint his own coins.
