Burchard (Burcardus), Abbot of Balerma (Balerna, Balerne) in Burgundy, was a disciple of Saint Bernard. He is remembered on April 19 and is listed as "Blessed Burchard" by the chroniclers of the Cistercian Order.

THE ANCIENT ABBEY OF BALERNE

The abbey of Balerne (also sometimes called "Saint-Pierre or Notre-Dame de Balerne") is located to the south-west of the village of Champagnole, in the Jura. The exact spot is a very isolated site, in a valley bottom, near the course of the Balerne.

Founded at the very beginning of the 12th century by Benedictine monks, it later became a Cistercian establishment, and it quickly became one of the most important monasteries in the region.

Attached first to the diocese of Besançon then to that of Saint-Claude, and therefore in the province of Lyon, the Abbey of Balerne's goods were seized and partly dismantled during the French Revolution [the Reign of Terror].

SERVANT OF GOD JACQUES HAMEL, PRIEST AND MARTYR "Jacques Hamel (30 November 1930 - 26 July 2016) was a French Catholic priest who served in Saint-Étienne-du-Rouvray. On July 26, 2016, Hamel was murdered during the 2016 Normandy church attack by two Muslim men pledging allegiance to the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant while he celebrated Mass in his church." (From Wikipedia) Father Hamel, 85, still officiated regularly as auxiliary at the church in St Étienne-du-Rouvray, near Rouen, Normandy, France, and in neighbouring Elbeuf, local media reported, stepping in when the parish’s regular priest, Father Auguste Moanda-Phuati, was busy.
