BLESSED GUICHARD, ARCHBISHOP OF LYON
Guichard of Pontigny (Guicardus, Guichardus), commemorated on July 28, first Cistercian abbot in Pontignac (Pontigny), and from 1168 Archbishop of Lyon, lived in the 12th century. He strove to be an apostolic guide to eternal life for his followers, preached fervently, visited the sick and the poor, and gave generous alms to the disadvantaged. In 1185, he died full of merit and with a reputation for holiness. Bucelin* lists him as "blessed." (VI. 501)
