BLESSED MANFRED OF RIVA, HERMIT
This blessed Manfred, whose name means "protection of men," is a folk saint about whom little can be reported with certainty. It is not known when he lived or when he died. Some writers suggest that Manfred went to his eternal reward in 1430, but he seems to have flourished much earlier than that.
A native of Milan, he adopted the habit of a hermit after receiving priestly ordination and lived for many years in a cave near Riva on Lake Como, subsisting only on herbs and the alms of good people. When he died, the bells of the nearest village are said to have started to ring by themselves. His mortal remains are venerated in Riva in the Church of Saint Vitalis. Here, his feast is celebrated annually. Each year, it attracts large crowds.
