SAINT ACACIUS, BISHOP OF ANTIOCH, CONFESSOR   Saint Acacius (Achates) was bishop of Antioch, probably the town of that name in Phrygia, where the Marcionites were numerous. He was surnamed Agath-angel, or Good-angel, and extremely respected by the people for his sanctity.  NOT ONE OF HIS FLOCK RENOUNCED CHRIST It was owing to his zeal that not one of his flock renounced Christ, by sacrificing to idols during the persecution of Decius, a weakness which several of the Marcionite heretics had betrayed. BLESSED DODO  Dodo, a devout young dutchman, frequented the churches, fasted, assisted the poor, and obeyed his parents. Following his marriage, he, his wife, and his widowed mother all decided to enter religious life. Dodo received his abbot’s permission to live as a hermit. HE HEARD A VOICE FROM THE CROSS He ultimately journeyed to Asch, Netherlands, finding there an abandoned sanctuary with two images, a crucifix and a statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary. While praying before the crucifix, Dodo heard a voice from the cross telling him that he was to settle in Asch. There he spent the rest of his life, rising daily at midnight for the office of matins and continuing his prayers until the morning Mass. In adoration he offered to God five hundred genuflections every day. Dodo’s prayers wrought miraculous cures. Pope Stephen X was born probably about the beginning of the eleventh century and died at Florence, March 29, 1058.  HIS NOBLE BIRTH Frederick was the son of Gozelon, Duke of Lower Lorraine and of Junca, the daughter of Berengarius II, King of Italy. As he advanced in years he became as distinguished for character and learning as he was for his birth. It was seemingly whilst he was a canon of Liège that his cousin Leo IX met him and made him chancellor and librarian of the Roman Church (c. 1051).  THE FAMOUS TRIP TO CONSTANTINOPLE He accompanied Leo IX in his apostolic journeyings throughout Europe, and was sent by him on the famous embassy to Constantinople (1054) which terminated in the final separation of the Eastern and Western Churches. He is called a martyr because he patiently endured persecution, shame and banishment for the expansion and freedom of the Church.  HE WAS EXILED Elected in 1236, he also lived as a bishop like a religious, having previously belonged to the Premonstratensian order. He had constant struggles with Duke Albert (Albrecht) until he was exiled to Wismar, where Duke Johann, known as the theologian, admitted him.  HIS HOLY DEATH His death took place in 1250. In the fourteenth century he was canonised. SAINT MARK, BISHOP OF ARETHUSA Some Greeks rank among the saints on this day Mark, bishop of Arethusa, in Syria, in the fourth age. When Constantius put to death his uncle Julius Constantius, brother of Constantine the Great, with his eldest son; the two younger, Gallus and Julian, narrowly escaped the sword. In that danger Mark concealed Julian, and secretly supplied him with necessaries for his subsistence.  HE CONVERTED A GREAT NUMBER OF PAGANS When Julian became emperor, he commanded that the temples which had been demolished by Christians, during the two preceding reigns, should be rebuilt at their expense. Mark had, by the authority of Constantius, demolished a very magnificent temple which was held in great veneration by the idolaters: he had also built a church, and converted a great number of infidels.  Authorised by the law of Julian, the heathens of Arethusa, when they saw themselves uppermost,

ST EUSTASIUS, ABBOT OF LUXEUIL  Saint Eustasius (Eustachius) succeeded his master St Columban in the charge of abbot, in 611. He sanctified himself by humility, continual prayer, watching, and fasting; was the spiritual father of six hundred monks, and of many holy bishops and saints, and died in 625.
