SAINT LUDOLPH, BISHOP AND MARTYR
Saint Ludolph was the eighth bishop of Ratzeburg, the first of that name. He is called a martyr because he patiently endured persecution, shame and banishment for the expansion and freedom of the Church.
HE WAS EXILED
Elected in 1236, he also lived as a bishop like a religious, having previously belonged to the Premonstratensian order. He had constant struggles with Duke Albert (Albrecht) until he was exiled to Wismar, where Duke Johann, known as the theologian, admitted him.
HIS HOLY DEATH
His death took place in 1250. In the fourteenth century he was canonised. The Benedictine nunnery Rehna, which founded and endowed with income, washis most beautiful monument.

O God, who gladden us each year by the feast of Saint Ludolph, graciously grant that, as we rejoice in his merits, we may be inspired by his example. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen.
