Saints celebrated on the 30th of July
SAINT URSUS, BISHOP OF AUXERRE, CONFESSOR
Saint Ursus (July 30, July 29), Confessor and Bishop of Auxerre, was the tenth (eleventh) in the order of succession. The Gallia Christiana* and Ferrarius* list him on July 29.
For a long time, Saint Ursus lived in great austerity in a hermit's cell near Saint Amator's Church. Once, when a violent fire broke out in the city, it was miraculously quenched. On this occasion the people had become acquainted with his merits; therefore, when the holy bishop Censurius departed hence, Ursus was taken out of his cell and placed on the episcopal chair. He ruled his diocese for six years and four months and died on July 30 at the beginning of the 6th century, around the year 508, in the 72nd year of his life.
Saint Ursus is mentioned in the Roman Martyrology*, and Baronius* in his work remarks (notae) that he co-signed a synodal letter sent by some Gallic bishops to Pope Leo. Because the holy pontiff died already in 456, this statement appears to be incorrect.
Saint Ursus' body was buried next to his predecessors in the church of Saint Germanus. From then on he himself was venerated and invoked as a saint. His successor was Saint Theodosius. (VII. 158)
