HILDEGARD, ABBESS OF FRAUMUNSTER - 23 DECEMBER

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN DECEMBER Saints celebrated on the 23rd of December WELCOME! HILDEGARD, ABBESS OF FRAUMUNSTER Hildegard [Hildegarde, Hildegardis ] (b. 828; d. December 23, 856 or 859) was a daughter of the Carolingian East Frankish King Louis the German and his wife Hemma. She was born as her father's first child. After 844, she became abbess of the Münsterschwarzach Monastery , which had been founded in 780 as a private monastery of the Carolingian ruling house. On July 21, 853, Louis the German founded the Fraumünster Monastery in Zürich [Fraumunster in Zurich], which Hildegard took over as abbess; her younger sister Bertha succeeded her in Münsterschwarzach .  A legend tells of the founding of the new monastery: the two sisters moved into Baldern Castle on the Albis mountain to lead a secluded, pious life. During one of their hikes to Zürich, where they intended to pray in the chapel dedicated to Felix and Regula, a stag with shining antlers guided them through ...

MARCIN STRZODA, JESUIT - 26 AUGUST

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN AUGUST Saints celebrated on the 26th of August WELCOME! MARCIN STRZODA, JESUIT Because of his pious conduct, Marcin Strzoda ( Martinus Stredonius ), a priest of the  Society of Jesus , was held in high esteem by Emperors Ferdinand and Leopold. Many events were prophesied by him that later came true. He was often ecstatic in prayer, and his body was lifted into the air. Filled with extraordinary love for the sick, he tirelessly cared for them, and several of the infirm were miraculously healed. Known for having strictly subjected his body all his life, he also abstained from all meat and wine for many years. He presided over the province of Bohemia twice. Finally, he went to his eternal reward on August 26, 1649, as he had prophesied, in the college at Brno. (Menol. Soc. Jesu 63). ADRIANA CORTONA, VIRGIN - 2 AUGUST

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN AUGUST Saints celebrated on the 2nd of August WELCOME! ADRIANA CORTONA, VIRGIN Adriana Cortona, Virgin, is commemorated on August 2, and also on July 13 and August 10. Adriana, whom Huber * lists as " blessed " in his Menologium of the Franciscan Order* , was the biological sister of  Saint Margaret of Cortona in Tuscany. She belonged to the third order of  Saint Francis . Since she was undecided about which monastery to enter, the Lord arranged for her to go to Assisi to gain the  Portiuncula Indulgence there. Since a large crowd was there at that time for this indulgence, Adriana was caught in a stampede and was injured so badly that she had to be returned home sick, where she died in 1292. It is further documented that when her sister  Margaret   prayed for her soul, she heard a voice from heaven announcing that her sister Adriana, through the power of the great indulgence, had been admitted straight into heaven without the t...

MARTIN MEYER, RELIGIOUS - 19 JULY

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN JULY Saints celebrated on the 19th of July WELCOME! MARTIN MEYER, RELIGIOUS  Martin Meyer ( Martinus Meyer ), a pious Capuchin from Switzerland, is remembered on July 19. Born in Eggelshosen in 1579, he received the name Friedrich at baptism and, after an innocent youth, chose the Capuchin Order as his life's vocation. He took this step to fulfill his desire to lead himself and others to the heavenly fatherland.  He was invested in Zug in 1598. As a cleric, he studied theological sciences with tireless zeal, especially spiritual oratory, and achieved such success that the people everywhere gladly listened to him. He brought about numerous conversions. Moreover, he combined words with deeds. Through his loving persuasion, he helped to found the hospital in Sursee; he aided the regions of Obwalden and Niedwalden, which were at war with each other, to reach a just settlement of their grievances and thus to achieve peace; and last but not least did...

ST POTITUS, MARTYR OF SARDINIA - 13 JANUARY

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN JANUARY Saints celebrated on the 13th of January WELCOME! SAINT POTITUS, MARTYR OF SARDINIA Saint Potitus, Martyr, is commemorated on January 13 as well as January 1, 3, 12; April 8, November 13.  The existing story of the suffering of this Saint Potitus is spurious. For this reason, the  Roman Martyrology * merely states that he suffered "much" under the Emperor Antoninus, i.e., in Sardinia in A.D.154, and was finally beheaded.  We do not know whether this particular entry prompted writers of legends to come up with "much" about his sufferings or, rather, the unreliability of the existing stories necessitated such a general expression on the part of the editor Roman Martyrology *. In any case, his relics were transferred to Pisa along with those of Saint Ephitus. In Naples, he is also highly honoured, and his feast is celebrated on January 30 with a special office. The hymns introduced there for his veneration are printed in the works of ...

HUGH OF SAINT VICTOR, MYSTIC - 11 FEBRUARY

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN FEBRUARY   Saints celebrated on the 11th of February WELCOME! VENERABLE HUGH OF SAINT VICTOR, MYSTIC V. Hugo de S. Victore  (commemorated on July 5, and also on February 11), also called "Hugh of Paris," is counted among the "Blessed" by Ferrarius * and Migne* , but others, and especially all the French sources, list him as "Venerable." We too give him this title, because the  Bollandists * do (II. 215). In their work, they then cite his praise from Saussayus * and remark that they have not come across sources that call him " Saint " or " Blessed ," which is why they mention him among their praetermissi . He seems to have been born around the year 1097.  Whether he descended, as is commonly assumed, from the Blankenburg family of counts is as uncertain as his homeland, as he is sometimes listed as a Saxon, sometimes as a Flemishman, a Lorrainer, and a Gaul. According to Mabillon *, he was born in the Ypres r...

ABBEY SAINT-VICTOR, PARIS

WELCOME! ABBEY SAINT-VICTOR, PARIS Saint Victor's Abbey, Paris (Abbey of Saint Victor) In the year 1108, the famous William of Champeaux, archdeacon of Notre-Dame in Paris, who had been lecturing to crowds of students, relinquishing his chair, retired to a small hermitage dedicated to Saint Victor, the martyr soldier, near the city. Here he was followed by many of his disciples, Abelard among them, and induced again to take up his lectures. Hence the origin of the Royal Abbey and School of Saint Victor. With some of his followers, William had become a canon regular, but, at the request of Saint Bernard he was made Bishop of Châlons in 1113, and was succeeded at Saint Victor's by Gildwin, a man, as the " Necrologium " records, of piety and learning, and zealous in promoting the canonical order.  The abbey, by the generosity of popes, kings, queens, and noblemen, was soon richly endowed. Numerous religious houses of canons regular were reformed by its canons. Saint G...

HUGH OF SAINT VICTOR, ABBOT AND MYSTIC - 11 FEBRUARY

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN FEBRUARY   Saints celebrated on the 11th of February WELCOME! HUGH OF SAINT VICTOR, ABBOT AND MYSTIC Hugh of Saint Victor   Hugh of Saint Victor , born 1096, was Abbot of the Monastery of St Victor (Paris). He died [February 11], 1141. Hugh of Saint Victor is one of the orthodox mystics who, in contrast to the dialectical method of scholasticism, emphasize the spiritual vision of the highest truths and realities, although Church doctrine provides the criterion for the truth of vision. God is exalted above all being and includes it within himself. God is triune: Reason, Wisdom, and Love. Humanity is destined to participate in the blessedness of God. Toward the inner vision of God, the spirit rises above the stages of thought (cogitatio) and reflection (meditatio) to that of contemplation (on the part of the "intelligentia" ) and ecstasy. The soul is an immaterial, animating substance "anima substantia est vivificans... minime vero corporea....

RICHARD OF SAINT VICTOR, ABBOT AND MYSTIC - 10 MARCH

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN MARCH   Saints celebrated on the 10th of March WELCOME! RICHARD OF SAINT VICTOR, ABBOT AND MYSTIC Saint Victor's Abbey, Paris Richard of St Victor, a Scotsman, student and successor of Hugh of St Victor , was prior and teacher at the monastery of St Victor in Paris. He died [March 10], 1173. Like Hugh of St Victor, Richard is a representative of orthodox mysticism. He distinguishes three types of knowledge: thinking or imagining (cogitatio) , reflection (meditatio) or conceptual intellectual thinking, and contemplation (contemplatio) , i.e., spiritual vision through the intellect, which grasps the supersensible directly and unifiedly ("Contemplationem dicimus, quando veritatem sine aliquo involucro umbrarum vel animi in sua puritate videmus").   There are six stages of contemplation: The first is based on the visual imagination (imaginatio) , by means of which we admire divine power and goodness; the second turns to the reason and purpose of th...

ST MELITON, BISHOP OF SULCI - 1 APRIL

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN APRIL Saints celebrated on the 1st of April WELCOME! SAINT MELITON, BISHOP OF SULCI Saint Meliton (Melito), Bishop (April 1). Some hagiographers list two bishops of this name as of April 1:  Meliton of Sardes in Asia and Meliton of Sulci in Sardinia. The former composed the Apology for the Christians, which he wrote with the Emperor Marcus Aurelius (161-180) in mind, and is the author of various other books that testify to his extraordinary ability and activity. They have been lost, except for a few fragments.  Eusebius has preserved only their titles; among them we find a book on the Easter celebration, on the Church, on soul, body, and spirit, on the Incarnation, etc. Tertullian praises his pure and eloquent style and says that many attributed to him the gift of prophecy.  Bellarmine and Halloix, the editor of his fragments, call him a saint. At the same time they make it very clear that the quality of the text: De transitu B. V. (of t...

ST URSUS, BISHOP OF TROYES - 25 JULY

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN JULY Saints celebrated on the 25th of July WELCOME! SAINT URSUS, BISHOP OF TROYES Saint Ursus is commemorated on July 25th and also on July 26. According to the  Gallica Christiana*,  this holy confessor was the seventh Bishop of Troyes, succeeding Aurelius. The faithful and conscientious fulfillment of all episcopal pastoral duties drove him - even when he was already decrepit and ill - to travel throughout his diocese. He succumbed to his exertions at Queudes ( Cubita ), then in the diocese of Chalons-sur-Marne, in the year 426. He was also buried there. The greater part of his mortal remains were later transferred to Troyes, to the cathedral and to the Church of Saint Stephen in Troyes. The faithful venerated them year in, year out until they were removed as dangerous to the state by the French Revolution . (VI. 167.) BL. FREDERICK, ABBOT - 3 MARCH

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN MARCH Saints celebrated on the 3rd of March WELCOME! BLESSED FREDERICK, ABBOT Blessed Frederick ( Fredericus ), commemorated on March 3, was born in the village of Hallum , two hours from Leeuwarden or Liewerden in Friesland. He lost his father Dodo at an early age, but retained a God-fearing mother in Suitberga (Sibrich), under whose watchful eye he grew up in innocence and simplicity of heart, to the joy of all around him.  For his scholarly education he went to Münster and made admirable progress there in virtue and learning. A particular lover of virginal purity, he chose Saint John the Evangelist as his preeminent patron, and after the Blessed Virgin, he also had a fervent veneration of the angelically pure Saint Cecilia, Virgin and Martyr.  After completing his studies, he returned home and remained there, edifying the community with his example of virtue, until he reached the age necessary to receive priestly ordination.  As a newl...

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN MAY Saints celebrated on the 8th of May WELCOME! VENERABLE FREDERICK, ABBOT OF HIRSCHAU Monastery yard in the snow Venerable Frederick ( Fredericus , Friedrich is remembered on May 8, and also on February 19. He descended from an old noble family of Swabia and was carefully instructed in the sciences in his youth. Following the inspiration of divine grace, he entered the monastery of Meinradszelle (now Mariä-Einsiedeln in Switzerland), where he distinguished himself for his humility and obedience, as well as for his zeal in his studies.  At that time, the monastery building at  Hirschau [Hirsau] had already lain desolate and dilapidated for half a century. The Counts of Calw, as protectors of the monastery, had  sadly been instrumental in bringing it into this pitiful condition.  Pope Leo IX , who happened to came to Germany, saw the sad state of affairs and demanded from Count Adalbert, his relative, the restoration of the monaste...
