ADRIANA CORTONA, VIRGIN
Adriana Cortona, Virgin, is commemorated on August 2, and also on July 13 and August 10. Adriana, whom Huber* lists as "blessed" in his Menologium of the Franciscan Order*, was the biological sister of Saint Margaret of Cortona in Tuscany. She belonged to the third order of Saint Francis. Since she was undecided about which monastery to enter, the Lord arranged for her to go to Assisi to gain the Portiuncula Indulgence there. Since a large crowd was there at that time for this indulgence, Adriana was caught in a stampede and was injured so badly that she had to be returned home sick, where she died in 1292. It is further documented that when her sister Margaret prayed for her soul, she heard a voice from heaven announcing that her sister Adriana, through the power of the great indulgence, had been admitted straight into heaven without the temporal punishment of purgatory. Adriana is said to have preserved her baptismal innocence until her death. In the Seraphic Order, she is venerated on July 13.
