| Hugh of Saint Victor |
Hugh of Saint Victor, born 1096, was Abbot of the Monastery of St Victor (Paris). He died [February 11], 1141.
Hugh of Saint Victor is one of the orthodox mystics who, in contrast to the dialectical method of scholasticism, emphasize the spiritual vision of the highest truths and realities, although Church doctrine provides the criterion for the truth of vision. God is exalted above all being and includes it within himself. God is triune: Reason, Wisdom, and Love. Humanity is destined to participate in the blessedness of God. Toward the inner vision of God, the spirit rises above the stages of thought (cogitatio) and reflection (meditatio) to that of contemplation (on the part of the "intelligentia") and ecstasy. The soul is an immaterial, animating substance "anima substantia est vivificans... minime vero corporea." The vital force ("vis vitalis") is located in the heart, the imagination ("vis animalis") in the brain. Richard of St Victor was one of his most famous students.
His notable writings include: De arca Noë mystica. De arca mundi. Eruditio didascalica. De sacramentis.
