SAINTS EWALD AND SIXTUS, MARTYRS

Saints Ewald and Sixtus (Evaldus [Eovaldus] et Sixtus) are commemorated on May 7. Ewald seems to be an Old German name borne by a man who entered the Roman military service and came to Gerunda (Girona), an ancient episcopal city in Spain, where he was martyred under Dacian along with a certain Sixtus.

An ancient legend runs thus: "In the city of Celran lived a pious peasant who daily attended holy Mass. One night, an angel appeared to him in his sleep and said: 'Servant of God, go to that vineyard of yours next to the church of the virgin and martyr Saint Thekla. There you will find the bodies of two saints who suffered for their faith in Jesus. At the time, they were hidden there by devout believers.'

For three days in a row, after rising at daybreak and assisting at Holy Mass, he made his way to the designated place and each time saw a shining spot. So he provided himself with the necessary tools, and after a heartfelt prayer, he began to dig, and soon found a wooden, artistically made and locked container, and immediately afterwards a second. He reported this to the bishop of Gironda.

The holy prelate then turned up with clergy and people, meaning to transfer the precious treasures to his episcopal church to the singing of hymns. But he could not take them beyond the parish of Celran. It was impossible to move them further. Therefore, recognising the finger of God, he set down the martyrs' mortal remains in the church of the latter city, and enjoined those present to pray that God might also reveal the names of the saints whose bodies he had so wonderfully caused to be found.

Suddenly, the containers opened by themselves, so that all the people could see the holy relics including an inscription, saying: 'Saint  Ewald, martyr'; and in the other: 'Saint Sixtus, martyr.' After closing the coffins, the bishop erected two altars and interred the relics beneath them. To these the faithful came in droves, and received wonderful help through the intercession of the saints. In Spain, their memory is also celebrated on July 17. (Maj. II. 134)

ST JOHN BERCHMANS, RELIGIOUS - 13 AUGUST

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN AUGUST Saints celebrated on the 13th of August WELCOME! SAINT JOHN BERCHMANS, RELIGIOUS   (Patron Saint of Altar Servers.) The eldest boy of a poor cordwainer, in a small Belgian town, John was ever a dutiful, prayerful, and studious child. Our Lord called him when but young to leave his father and his father’s house, to serve Him in the Society of Jesus.  And because he was so good a son, it cost his father much to give him up to God; but he was too good a Christian to refuse outright.  HE WAS SENT TO ROME John had hardly taken his religious vows when he was sent to the centre of Christendom, the holy city of Rome. His modesty, his purity, shone out as great virtue always does; and the young laymen who attended the lectures would come to gaze upon his beautiful and holy face, and go away the better for the sight. GREAT VIRTUE Three short years, and his last sickness found him sighing for heaven, and three days before the great feast of Mary’s Assumption in 1

ST LAURA OF CORDOBA, WIDOW AND MARTYR - 19 OCTOBER

WELCOME! SAINT LAURA OF CORDOBA, WIDOW AND MARTYR   Laura, a widow and martyr of Cordoba in Spain, is mentioned in the Spanish martyrology of Tamajode Salazar, who refers to Luitprand, where it says the following: St Laura is said to have been of a noble family, and  according to the wishes of her parents she married an equally noble man and gave birth to two daughters.  After the death of her husband and her daughters, she went to the monastery of St Aurea, named St-Maria de Cuteclara, and after her martyrdom led the same for nine years as her successor.  After she had made wonderful progress in all virtues, she was finally summoned to renounce the faith before a Saracen judge. But since she remained steadfast, she was first beaten very cruelly and then thrown into a bath of boiling pitch, where she remained in praise of God for three hours and then flew to heaven on October 19, 864.   St Laura is of the 48 Martyrs of Cordoba. PRAYER: Grant, we beseech you, almighty God, that we who
