RICHARD OF ARNSBERG, RELIGIOUS

  WELCOME! RICHARD OF ARNSBERG, RELIGIOUS  Scriptorium Monk at Work Richard, of the Premonstratensian Order, occupied himself with copying books for God's sake in his monastery in Arnsberg, Diocese of Cologne, and composed a biography of Saint Ursula . This is why, as  Caesarius of Heisterbach (d. 1240) reports, his right hand was found in the grave 20 years later, still fresh, while his body had long since decayed. He lived in the late 12th century. BL. RICHARD, ARCHDEACON OF AOUST

  WELCOME! BLESSED RICHARD, ARCHDEACON OF AOUST Richard, the immediate successor of Saint  Bernard of Menthon  (d. 1008) and, like him, archdeacon of Aoust  ( Aosta),  is listed by many hagiographers with the title "blessed." He deeply cared for the afflicted and starving, and had prepared himself for his calling through pilgrimages to the Promised Land, Rome, and other places of grace. He was also the first to describe the life of Saint  Bernard of Menthon   based on his own observations and other reliable sources.  (Burg. III. 759.) BLESSED RICHARD, RELIGIOUS Richard (commemorated on December 30, April 26, July 11), a 12th century doctor and monk of the Cistercian Order at Adwerde near Groningen in Friesland, shone through his virtues and miracles.   WELCOME! BLESSED RICHARD, ABBOT Richard, first abbot of Saint-Marie-aux-Bois in the diocese of Toul in Lorraine, who died a saintly death in 1100, is listed as "blessed" by Migne *. An excellent student of Saint Norbert , he distinguished himself by his punctual obedience. His power over the possessed was attributed to his strict practice of this virtue. RICHARD FITZRALPH, ARCHBISHOP OF ARMAGH - 21 DECEMBER

RICHARD CHARTRIET, RELIGIOUS Richard Chartriet, remembered on August 9 , was a martyr of the Franciscan Order in England. During the reign of King Henry VIII, whom he refused to recognize as head of the Church, Richard died in 1537 from exhaustion as a result of severe prison suffering, along with several other men and women (II. 400).   WELCOME! BLESSED RICHARD, BISHOP OF FOSSOMBRONE Richard, commemorated on August 7, Bishop of Fossombrone (Forum Sempronii) in Umbria, is listed by Artur * as a "blessed." According to Sintzel *, Blessed Richard descended from a aristocratic family, but was even more noble by his excellent virtues. In order to serve God alone, he avoided the company of men and loved solitude, devoting himself solely to prayer and spiritual learning.  When he was elected Bishop of Fossombrone, he refused, saying in his humility: "A bishop, according to the saying of Saint Paul , should be blameless; How shall I, an unworthy man, dare to accept the episcopal dignity, when I am so reprehensible in my actions and omissions?" He entered the Order of the Friars Minor, went to Tartary as a missionary, became Bishop of Armalech ( Episcopus Armalecanus, Eiscopus Civitatis Armalech in Tartaria) and, on the  feast of Saint John the Baptist in 1352, was cruelly murdered for his faith along with several other brothers. RICHARD, ABBOT OF ST VANNES - 14 JUNE

VENERABLE RICHARD, ABBOT OF ST VANNES Venerable Richard, abbot of the Benedictine monastery of St Vannes near Verdun was born in France to Christian parents. His father was named Walter, his mother Theorada. He studied in Reims. There he became a priest, music master, and archdeacon. After a few years, he sold everything he owned and entered the monastery St Vannes near Verdun. In 1004, he was elected abbot with the approval of Bishop Haemon. He enjoyed such widespread trust that many bishops and secular lords entrusted him with the reform of the monasteries in their territories. His efforts in this direction were indeed successful, but also cost him much effort, night vigils, and caused him bitterness. At one point, his own life was in great danger. RICHARD OF ST ANNE, MISSIONARY AND MARTYR - 10 SEPTEMBER

  ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN SEPTEMBER Saints celebrated on the 10th of September WELCOME! VENERABLE RICHARD OF ST ANNE, MISSIONARY AND MARTYR Venerable Richard (Richardus), commemorated on September 10 and June 27, a priest of the Order of Saint Francis and martyr in Japan, was burned for his faith in 1622. He was originally from Belgium. As a small child, a wolf had seized him and dragged him away for a while. When, after invoking Saint Anne, he was returned to his mother's home without any particular injury, he adopted the above-mentioned nickname. He came to Japan disguised as a merchant and died heroically in Nagasaki. ST ALBERIC, ABBOT - 26 JANUARY

  ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN JANUARY Saints celebrated on the 26th of January WELCOME! SAINT ALBERIC, ABBOT Saint Alberic receives the white robe from the Blessed Virgin  The blessed Alberic, Abbot and co-founder of the Order of Citeaux [Cîteaux] (Cistercium) , was one of the noblest disciples of  Saint Robert , for which reason the latter appointed him Prior at the Monastery of Molesme. But when the greater part of the monks opposed  Robert 's pious intentions in observing the Holy Rule, and he founded a new settlement in Citeaux, a marshy desert near Châlons in Burgundy, Alberic was his inseparable companion and shared with him all the hardships and difficulties of the first foundation. He and 18 companions renewed their oath of allegiance to the Rule of  Saint Benedict  on March 21, 1098, and when Robert returned to Molesme, he was elected Abbot of Citeaux. THE FIRST ABBOTS OF CÎTEAUX The first three abbots of Cîteaux are regarded as the Founders of the Cistercian Order:  Saint Robert of Molesme , Saint Alberic , and  Saint Stephen Harding  were the pioneers of the monastery in Cîteaux, France. Their way of life was based on a particular interpretation of the Rule of  Saint Benedict . The Cistercian Order celebrates their joint feast ( January 26 ) as a solemnity. ADELAIDE, WIDOW - 10 FEBRUARY

ADELAIDE, ABBESS - 28 APRIL

  WELCOME! ADELAIDE, ABBESS Adelaide (Adelheidis) , Abbess, is remembered on April 28. She was born into the illustrious house of the Counts of Ridtberg and and at an early age entered the monastery of  Saint Aegidius in Münster. Subsequently she became abbess there. She had a special devotion to Jesus the Crucified, whose image she constantly carried with her, and shone before all by the holiness of her example. She flourished in 1325. ADELAIDE, RECLUSE - 20 AUGUST

  ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN AUGUST Saints celebrated on the 20th of August WELCOME! ADELAIDE, RECLUSE Adelaide (Adelheidis) , Virgin and Recluse, is remembered on August 20. Artur du Monstier * lists her on this day with the title "Saint". She was a disciple of Saint Ugebeda, who rendered great service to the restoration of the Order of Hermits (cloisters). She lived for many years as a recluse until she was freed from her double imprisonment, namely that of her body and of the freely chosen confinement of her cell, and instead entered the heavenly freedom of the children of God.
