ST ELIAS, HERMIT OF ANTINUS

WELCOME! SAINT ELIAS, HERMIT OF ANTINUS  Elias, a hermit in Egypt, lived near the city of Antinos [ Antinus ], in an almost inaccessible wilderness. The only way by which one could get to him was so narrow and full of rocks that there seemed to be no path at all.  Before he reached his old age, Elias often spent whole weeks without food. He was 110 years old in A.D. 371, when Rufinus paid him an unexpected visit around. Elias lived in a dreadful and ramshackle grotto, and his whole body trembled under the weight of the years. Despite his extreme age, he ate no other food than a little bread and a few olives. Due to his advanced age, it is assumed that he did not live much longer after Rufinus' visit. (Mg.) ST ELIAS, BISHOP OF SYRACUSE - 26 AUGUST

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN AUGUST Saints celebrated on the 26th of August WELCOME! SAINT ELIAS, BISHOP OF SYRACUSE Saint Elias [Elijah] started off as a deacon at the church in Syracuse (Sicily). When Bishop Peter died, a successor was needed. Elias sided with the greater part of the clergy and people, who wanted to see Zosimus, abbot of the monastery of St Lucien, as head of the episcopal see of Syracuse. Zosimus had a reputation for holiness, unlike the other candidate, Venerius by name. Deacon Elias tearfully implored the abbot Zosimus to take up the shepherd's crook. Zosimus gave in and was subsequently consecrated Bishop of the Church of Syracuse by Pope Theodore I. After his death, the deacon Elias was honoured by Pope Vitalian to be appointed as Zosimus' successor. Bishop Elias went to his eternal reward around the year 664.  (Information from  Stadler 's Complete Encyclopedia of Saints,  Volume  2, Augsburg, 1861, p. 33) Stadler's Complete Encyclopedia o...

ST ELIAS, HERMIT

WELCOME! SAINT ELIAS, HERMIT OF PALESTINE  Saint Elias [Elijah], a hermit in Palestine, lived in a cave on the banks of the Jordan. There he devoted himself to all the exercises of the monastic life, prayed without ceasing, and received with great love all who came to see him. Because his cave was located on a very busy street, one day it happened that when several hermits came to visit him together, they were short of bread. Elias, deeply regretting that under these circumstances he could not fulfill the duty of hospitality as he would have wished, went into his cave, and how great was his astonishment when he found there three very fresh loaves of bread, which he joyfully brought to them. Although there were 20 of them, they were all able to eat two of the wonderful breads, and what was left was enough to feed Elias for 25 days. He lived at the end of the 4th century. (Mg.) Two unknown men appeared in front of the monastery gate with four mules laden with bread, wine, oil and grain. They unloaded the foodstuffs and left as silently as they had come. The holy abbess's blessed death was made known to one of the sisters: she had a vision of the lamp, which she happened to hold in her hand, being lifted out of her grasp and carried away to heaven by two angels.
