Elias, a hermit in Egypt, lived near the city of Antinos [Antinus], in an almost inaccessible wilderness. The only way by which one could get to him was so narrow and full of rocks that there seemed to be no path at all. Before he reached his old age, Elias often spent whole weeks without food. He was 110 years old in A.D. 371, when Rufinus paid him an unexpected visit around. Elias lived in a dreadful and ramshackle grotto, and his whole body trembled under the weight of the years. Despite his extreme age, he ate no other food than a little bread and a few olives. Due to his advanced age, it is assumed that he did not live much longer after Rufinus' visit. (Mg.)

PRAYER:
May the intercession of Saint Elias commend us to you, O God, so that through his merits we may obtain that which we cannot accomplish by our own. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen.
