Saints celebrated on the 4th of July
WELCOME!
SAINT ELIAS, BISHOP OF JERUSALEM
An Arabian by birth, Saint Elias [Elijah] went to Palestine and built himself a cell near Jericho, where he lived in complete abstinence. He took a special vow not to drink wine, which he followed for the rest of his life. In 473 he was ordained presbyter and in 493 bishop of Jerusalem. Because he and Bishop Flavian of Antioch zealously spoke up against the Monophysite heresy of Eutyches (which had been rejected at the fourth general church meeting at Chalcedon in 451), Emperor Anastasius expelled him from his bishopric. Elias died in exile. His name is listed in the Roman Martyrology* on July 4.
