SAINT ELIAS, HERMIT OF PALESTINE
Saint Elias [Elijah], a hermit in Palestine, lived in a cave on the banks of the Jordan. There he devoted himself to all the exercises of the monastic life, prayed without ceasing, and received with great love all who came to see him. Because his cave was located on a very busy street, one day it happened that when several hermits came to visit him together, they were short of bread. Elias, deeply regretting that under these circumstances he could not fulfill the duty of hospitality as he would have wished, went into his cave, and how great was his astonishment when he found there three very fresh loaves of bread, which he joyfully brought to them. Although there were 20 of them, they were all able to eat two of the wonderful breads, and what was left was enough to feed Elias for 25 days. He lived at the end of the 4th century. (Mg.)

PRAYER:
May the intercession of Saint Elias commend us to you, O God, so that through his merits we may obtain that which we cannot accomplish by our own. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen.
