SAINT ITHIER, BISHOP OF NEVERS
Saint Ithier (Itherius, Aetherius, Iterius, Ytherius)(St-Ithère in French) was bishop of Nevers (Nivernum) in France. He was instructed in all sciences and also distinguished by sanctity of life, as well as by the gift of miracles, but he endeavoured to avoid honour before men so much that he warned all whom he healed not to tell anyone about it.
He was later called to Rome, where the Pope kept him for 18 months. After his return Ithier was required as bishop by the clergy and people at Nevers, as which he reigned for many years. Saint Ithier died around the year 691.
After his death he was buried in his birthplace, which is now called Nogent (Noyen)-sur-Vernisson and is not far from Montargis (Mons Argisus). He is venerated not only in Nevers, but also in Orleans (Aurelium), Sens (Senones), Sully (Soliacum) and even in Bourges (Bituricae), where his feast on June 25 is celebrated sub ritu semid. The veneration on that day takes place in honour of Bishop Ithier of Nevers, rather than of the bishop of the same name of Bourges, as the Bollandists* stress.
