GOSWIN NICKEL, SUPERIOR-GENERAL OF THE SOCIETY OF JESUS Goswin Nickel Goswin Nickel, the 10th Superior General of the  Society of Jesus - a German - was highly renowned for his virtuous conduct and his outstanding gifts as the leader of this Order, which was then flourishing magnificently. For nearly twelve years, he served as Provincial of the Lower Rhine Province and twice as Assistant to the Superior General for Germany. Subsequently, he became Vicar General and, finally, Superior General. Despite his many administrative duties, he was deeply devoted to prayer. For five years, he was unable to walk - an affliction he bore with heroic patience, finding solace in the daily reception of the Holy Eucharist. He died in the year 1664.   ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN APRIL Saints celebrated on the 11th of April WELCOME! SAINT GUTHLAC, PRIEST AND HERMIT Saint Guthlac According to a source cited by the  Bollandists *,  the name Guthlac signifies " gift of war " - derived from gut or gund (war) and lac (gift).  This holy hermit Guthlac [ Guthlake ] sprang from a very noble - and according to some sources, royal - English lineage. He was born in the year 673 (or 667). Initially, he served as a warrior under King Ethelred of Mercia. However, witnessing how deeply God was offended in that environment, he withdrew at the age of twenty-four and entered the monastery of Repton ( Reponium, Ripandum) , where he lived for two years. In 699, with his superior's permission, he retired to the island of Croyland, accompanied by four companions (or two, according to Migne *). ABINGDON ABBEY  Trendell's Folly, Abbey Gardens  These ruins, which have been salvaged from elsewhere in the town and rebuilt here, are fragments from Abingdon Abbey, Abingdon-on-Thames, England (oxfordshire, historically Berkshire). Abingdon-on-Thames is believed to be Britain's oldest continuously inhabited town, with archaeological evidence showing human settlement for over 6,000 years. The earliest monastery was founded there circa 675 either by Cissa, viceroy of Centwine, king of the West Saxons, or by his nephew Hean, in honour of the Virgin Mary, for twelve  Benedictine  monks. Cissa was buried at the abbey. Endowed by successive West Saxon kings, it grew in importance and wealth until its destruction by the Danes in the reign of King Alfred . SAINT HERAIS, VIRGIN AND MARTYR Saint Heraïs [Herais], Virgin and Martyr suffered near Alexandria [in Antinoe] under Emperor Maximian - that is, about a hundred years later than the aforementioned Saint Heraïs . She was killed after cruel torments, but cannot be determined whether she eventually met her end by the sword, as some hagiographers say, or by fire, as others claim. According to tradition, she was the daughter of a priest named Peter and was born at Tama in Egypt. BLESSED AARON, ARCHBISHOP OF KRAKOW Aaron was born in France and belonged to the Benedictine Congregation of Cluny under the holy Abbot Odilo . There he distinguished himself by such virtue and learning that his superiors appointed him the first abbot of the monastery in Krakow [Kraków], which had been newly founded by  Casimir I and for which the king had specifically requested monks from Cluny. Soon thereafter, the king himself raised him to the rank of Archbishop of Krakow. The new archbishop was held in such high esteem by the cathedral chapter of his see that they not only admitted all his successors in the abbacy as honorary members but also adopted Aaron's family coat of arms - three golden crowns on a silver background - as the chapter's own coat of arms; the cathedral chapter of Vilnius did the same. BLESSED JULIA, VIRGIN AND ABBESS OF TRIER Julia, commemorated on July 7, was a virgin of Trier mentioned by Grevenus *, though the  Bollandists * are unable to provide reliable information about her. Upon further research, we discovered that in his work, Bucelin * lists only one Julia, whom he designates as "Blessed" on September 17; she was the third abbess of the Horreen or Orreen (Horreum) convent in Trier and died around the year 730. She is likely the one referred to here. In Zedler* (XLV. 723) , she is accorded the title of "Saint" and is likewise identified as the third abbess (II. 450). The holy virgins Thecla, Mariamna (Mary), Martha, Maria, and Anna ( Enneim ), "who preferred to die than to be unfaithful to their heavenly Bridegroom," suffered (Asseman-Zingerle, I. 100*) in the year 346 in Aksha (Asa, Kasciaz) in Assyria.
