In his younger years he had killed his wife, his father, and his child in a fit of sudden rage. He subsequently undertook arduous pilgrimages by way of penance and lived in solitude on a mountain near Vicenza, Italy, until his death. SAINT VERONA, VIRGIN Saint Verona, commemorated on August 29, was a virgin whose relics are venerated in a church bearing her name - formerly known as the Church of the Holy Cross . Outside the church lies a well, the water of which the faithful drink with trust and faith (pie) in Saint Verona's intercession at the throne of God. Engelmarus ) was a Bavarian by birth and of peasant stock, likely hailing from the region of Passau. Even as a young man, he turned his heart toward heavenly things, zealously striving to amass treasures against which neither rust, nor moth, nor thief could prevail. Having renounced worldly affairs, he chose the life of a hermit under the guidance of an Armenian bishop named Gregory, who - out of a love for solitude - had left his see and settled not far from Passau. After Gregory’s death on October 23, 1093, Engelmar travelled with a companion to the region of the Bavarian Forest - an area that now bears his name - and built himself a hut there. Although her conduct was exemplary and she set an example of the finest virtues for the court, two noblemen - jealous of her nobility of spirit and the trust the Emperor placed in her - accused her of adultery. Engelburga protested her innocence; however, the slander had made such an impression on people's minds that her only remaining recourse was the ordeal by water and fire - two methods of vindication common at the time. SAINT PIERRE DUMOULIN, PRIEST AND MARTYR  The missionary Petrus [Pierre] Dumoulin  was executed for his faith on November 14, 1838, in Tonkin [Vietnam], along with the local priest Petrus Koa . Petrus Dumoulin was born in Cors, Diocese of Tulle, on February 20, 1808. From childhood, he displayed great piety, a tender devotion to the Mother of God, and a rare work ethic. During a serious illness, he made a vow to dedicate himself entirely to the service of God and, with a dispensation for age for the purpose of missionary work, received priestly ordination on November 21, 1830.   ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN APRIL Saints celebrated on the 10th of April WELCOME! VENERABLE ENGELBERT, ABBOT OF SAINT BLAISE   Venerable Engelbert, Abbot, is remembered on April 10. A descendant of the distinguished Volkersdorff family in Styria, he chose monastic life and was elevated to abbot of Saint Blaise Abbey (Sankt Blasien) because of his learning and virtue. Each year he withdrew into solitude to a mountain cave for a certain period to devote himself undisturbed to contemplating heavenly matters. A fervent devotee of the Blessed Virgin Mary, he composed a beautiful hymn in her praise, and penned other edifying writings.   WELCOME! BALDWIN I., EMPEROR OF CONSTANTINOPLE  Baldwin I., Emperor of Constantinople  Baldwin I, Emperor of Constantinople, was the son of Count Baldwin VIII of Flanders. As Count Baldwin IX, he assumed the rule of Flanders and Hainaut in 1195. In 1200, he participated in the Crusade to the Holy Land. After the Crusaders captured Constantinople in 1204, Baldwin was elected Emperor of the newly established Latin Empire. He was a pious, chaste, wise, and courageous prince. SAINT GEBHARD, ARCHBISHOP OF SALZBURG, CONFESSOR Saint Gebhard   The name Gebhard is derived from Old High German words meaning " strong (tireless) in giving. "  Saint Gebhard ( Gebhardus ), Archbishop, Confessor, is commemorated on June 16. He was a descendant of the family of the Counts of Helffenstein, who resided between Ulm and the former Duchy of Württemberg . His father was named Chadold, his mother Azala. He had a sister, Dietberga, who married Werner of Reichersberg, the founder of Reichersberg Abbey , around 1070 or 1084. Saint Gebhard studied in Paris at the same time as the future bishops  Altmann of Passau and  Adalbero of Würzburg .
